PGA Preview: 2020 Houston Open Predictions

The Houston Open has a nice field of players as several are taking advantage of the similarities between Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston and Augusta National. The courses are not twins by any means but the ability to hammer some tee shots and putt on large tiered greens is enough to pull in players such as Dustin Johnson who is the favorite.

Johnson, the lone player under +1000, comes in at +700 as a heavy favorite according to Intertops. He returns following a short break due to COVID-19 testing. Brooks Koepka rounds out the top-five favorites with two other players at +1800.

Value picks may be the big story when it comes to making selections this week. Sergio Garcia and Jason Day are at +3500 and Phil Mickelson is down the list with several players coming in at +8000. Here are the favorites coming in at +1800 and under to win the 2020 Houston Open outright according to Intertops.

2020 Houston Open Preview

Where: Houston, Texas

Course: Memorial Park Municipal Golf Course

Par: 72

Length: 7,432 (PGA)

When: November 5 –8, 2020

Purse: $7 million

TV Coverage: Golf Channel

Memorial Park Golf Course is a perfect course for warming up to next week’s rescheduled Masters. The course dates back to the 1930s but Brooks Koepka had a hand in a redesign with Tom Doak over the last few years. The course now features fewer bunkers and water hazards that could come into play for pro-players while being a challenge for everyday golfers.

Greens average around 7000 square feet, fairways can play wide open, and PGA Tour players should carry the majority of the 19 bunkers. Only four holes where water can be a factor. The course has fewer trees than it has had in years past. Long story short – look for hard-hitting drivers off the tee!

Memorial has five par-five and five par-three holes, the course is Bermuda, and roughs are fairly short. Greens are tiered and reportedly running fast.

2020 Houston Open Outright Winner Picks

Dustin Johnson +700

Dustin Johnson is returning from a COVID-19 forced break due to testing before the ZOZO Championship. He should come into the Houston Open fresh and be able to take full advantage of the par-five holes resulting in low rounds. If he racks up birdies and eagles at Memorial Park then he’ll be hard to catch.

Viktor Hovland +2200

Like Johnson, Viktor Hovland should be able to shave strokes from his card every round on the par-five holes. Hovland has shown flashes of brilliance in 2020 and his style of game lends itself to this type of course.

Russell Henley +2200

Russell Henley has been playing great golf and Memorial Park is a course that should help him carry that trend forward. He has finished in the top-four in his last two events and is hitting both drivers and irons well.

Others I Like

Brooks Kooepka – Stewart Cink: Brooks Koepka comes in at +1800 and probably should be further up my list. But I’m holding off due to his slow recovery from last season’s surgery. However, his help in re-working this course is hard to ignore. Stewart Cink is a value pick at +7000. It looks like his son is on the bag for him again this week and when the two have paired- up in 2020 he’s finished with a win, a T12, and a T4.
