PGA Preview: 2020 Masters Odds and Picks

The Masters is finally here. The legendary Major golf tournament was postponed due to COVID- 19 but is teeing off this Thursday in Augusta. Fans will not be present and the azaleas are not blooming, but the Masters buzz can still be sensed in the golf world.

And, the favorites list is almost predictable with Bryson Dechambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Jon Rahm almost running neck-to-neck. The three come in as favorites according to oddsmakers +800, +900, +1000 respectively.

In case you’re wondering about Tiger Woods, the defending Masters Champion, he comes in at +3300 with several other players including Jason Day. If Woods can replicate the form he had last year at the Masters that +3300 could be one of the value picks of the week!

There are additional value picks listed in the full odds below besides Tiger. But scratch Sergio Garcia off your list. Garcia has withdrawn from the tournament due to COVID-19. The golfer said he started feeling light symptoms earlier in the week and a test confirmed his illness.

Garcia joins Joaquin Niemann who was also forced to exit the Masters field due to a positive test. Don’t worry, there are still plenty of top-players to choose from. Here are the favorites coming in at +1200 and under to win the 2020 Masters outright according to Intertops.

Bryson DeChambeau +800

Dustin Johnson +900

Jon Rahm +1000

Justin Thomas +1200

Rory McIlroy +1200

Augusta National is the famed home of the Masters golf tournament and tasty pimento cheese sandwiches – which are the traditional food item served up at Augusta. But, without fans being allowed at the delayed event, that tasty tradition is probably being scaled back.

Augusta National has no secrets, it has rolling terrain, water hazards that are well known, and deceptively open fairways that golfers across the globe want to sail a drive down. The course is very traditional, and possibly one of the best-maintained venues on the Tour.

At the same time, Augusta National is a premier course with plenty of challenges. The vast majority of players in this year’s field will have plenty of playing experience on the course so there should not be too many surprises.

The only difference is that this year’s Masters is being played in November instead of earlier in the Spring. Green speeds may be slightly different, the air may be cooler which could impact distance, and players teeing off later in the day will be fighting the clock to beat the sunset.

2020 PGA Masters Predictions

Dustin Johnson +900

Dustin Johnson returned from a forced COVID-19 break last week and finished T2 at the Houston Open with Hideki Matsuyama. That’s a nice finish for a person coming back following a brush with COVID! Johnson played his drives and fairway shots well last week which made for near spot-on putting.

Rory McIlroy +1200

Rory McIlroy has won just about everything and needs a Masters win to complete a career Grand Slam. He comes into Augusta with a solid game and – what some would say – a more mature outlook after becoming a father. Regardless of that, he’s finished in the top-ten five out of his last six trips to Augusta.

Brooks Koepka +1600

Brooks Koepka may be getting a better number at +1600 than he should be considering the fight he’s had recovering from surgery. But Augusta may be the course where he stages a comeback. I may regret it later, but his T2 finish last year is hard to ignore along with his efforts to recover by skipping play for several events.

Others I Like

Jordan Speith – Patrick Reed: Jordan Speith is my longshot at +4000. His battles at Augusta are either historic or the things nightmares are made of. He can win this week if he can regain some confidence in his game. Patrick Reed comes in at +2500 along with Bubba Watson. I’m going with Reed over Watson simply due to his 2018 Masters win over Rickie Fowler. Watson won the Masters in 2014, his second, but has not shown the same game the last several seasons.
