PGA Preview: 2021 Pebble Beach Odds and Picks

The luster that usually surrounds the Pebble Beach Pro-Am is not as shiny this year due to COVID-19. Several big-name players are not in the field including former favorite Dustin Johnson who has pulled out.

Also, there will not be huge crowds searching for their favorite celebrities taking part in the event as the PGA canceled the Pro-Am portion of the tournament. Don’t worry, celebrities will still have a shortened event before the four-day PGA tournament begins. Hopes are to return to the regular pro-am format next year.

This may be good news, PGA players will be able to attack the two famed Pebble Beach courses used in the event without too many distractions! This could be one of the better tournaments of the season as the field is still strong including Patrick Cantlay as the favorite at +700.

Also, this is Phil Mickelson’s playground and he’s eyeballing another Pebble Beach win! Lefty comes in at +4000. He’s won this event five times in the past including his latest in 2019.

Last year’s winner, Nick Taylor is returning to defend his title. The Canadian player comes in at +6600. Taylor has not had the best start of the season. He’s only finished in the top-fifteen once and has missed the cut four times out of ten events.

Here are the top-five favorites to win outright according to Intertops at +2000 and under.

Patrick Cantlay +700

Daniel Berger +1300

Jason Day +1600

Jordan Spieth +2000

Paul Casey +2000

Every player will play one round will be played at Spyglass Hill and three rounds at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Players can expect normal Pebble Beach conditions which means a good amount of ocean breeze on many holes. Targeted golf is the name of the game so second shots will rely heavily on great shots off the tee./p>

Players will face just about every type of hazard and rough possible between the two courses. But, both courses still have plenty of opportunities for shaving strokes. The last five events have been won by a score of 19-under three times with the remaining both at 17-under.

2021 Pebble Beach Predictions

Jordan Spieth +2000

Finally, Jordan Spieth looked like… Jordan Spieth! He’s not had a finish with the final group for the first time since the Open Championship in 2018. He’s moved from further down the favorites list to a spot in the top-six listed above due to his fourth-place effort last week. A few off tee-shots last week moved him from the lead – hopefully, he can correct that this week.

Paul Casey +2000

Paul Casey comes in at +2000 after a strong start to the 2021 calendar season. So far he’s carded a few top-ten finishes and a win two weeks ago in Dubai and followed that up with a T12. He’s also fared well at Pebble Beach over the years. In 2019 he finished second and T8 in 2018.

Phil Mickelson +4000

Phil Mickelson has been a player I’ve faded on all year but at +4000 he’s grabbing my attention. Especially at Pebble Beach. Mickelson has five wins at this tournament and he knows the course like the back of his… left hand! This would be a great time for his veteran and experienced play to shine through.

Others I Like: I’m looking at Rickie Fowler (+3300) and Brandt Snedeker (+6600) this week as well. Fowler needs a win to get back on track and is showing good signs of improvement here and there. It would be a great time to get a win before the Masters. Snedeker ripped Pebble Beach apart in 2015 going 22-under for a record win. He also won in 2013 going 19-under.
