PGA Preview: 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions Picks

The 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions signals a return of big names following the Christmas and New Years’ break. If everyone in the field seems like a winner – that’s because they are! The Tournament of Champions is for players that have won a PGA event last season.

Also, the field is rounded out with additional top 30 PGA players in the FedExCup standings who played in the TOUR Championship.

That means every name in the field can rise to the top! Starting with Dustin Johnson at +600 and Justin Thomas at +650. The first Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) are out for 2021, and Johnson and Thomas are two of the top three on the list.

The Plantation Course is one of two courses at the Kapalua Resort. The other is the Bay Course. The two could not be more different from each other. The Bay Course has the feel of a traditional golf course community layout… except it’s in beautiful Hawai and is set near historic structures, scenic views, and amazing coastlines.

The Plantation Course has elevation changes from a mountain to a valley, is a Par-73, and is the only course on the PGA schedule with seven holes of 500 yards or more.

Hazards are numerous and range from water and bunkers to cliffs and exposed rock and natural growth areas. Then, there are immaculately kept fairways, landing areas, roughs, and rolling greens that look like an expensive carpet on TV.

The challenge to players will be the way the ball carries in the higher areas as well as any winds from the ocean. Aside from that – they’ll have to approach the course as being long and targeted. There are not too many areas for huge mistakes but if played well the course can offer up surprising opportunities.

Over the last ten years, there have been three playoff finishes, two wins of 8 strokes, and three wins of one stroke, and the remaining being 3 or 4 stroke victories.

2021 PGA Tournament of Champions Predictions

Justin Thomas +650

Justin Thomas comes in at +650 and is the second-ranked golfer in the world. He’s also won this tournament two of the last four times. Thomas seems to be able to dial in the Plantation Course early and maintain a position near the top of the leaderboard. If he jumps out early he could cruise to a win.

Xander Schauffele +1000

Xander Schauffele is a great pick at +1000 and won this tournament in 2019 in a one-stroke win over Gary Woodland. Last year he challenged Justin Thomas and Patrick Reed for the win in a playoff before Thomas eventually grabbed the victory. Schauffele can play the safe – targeted golf that is required on many parts of the Plantation Course.

Viktor Hovland +2000

Harris English comes into the 2021 opener at +2000 after ending 2020 on a roll. The young Oklahoma State golfer from Norway powered onto the PGA scene and already has two wins under his belt. He won the Mayakoba Golf Classic only a few weeks ago.

Others I Like: It’s hard to ignore Dustin Johnson as a favorite and he’s the No. 1 golfer in the world. He’s an easy pick. But I’m looking further down the odds list. Two names that stand out are Patrick Reed at +1600 and Harris English at +3000. Both were strong last season and playing well at the end of the calendar year.
