The upcoming Heisman trophy race figures to be one of the more open fields in recent years, headlined by one familiar face.
Where to Bet on Heisman Trophy Winner
That top dog is Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, whose expectations were so high that he reportedly made more than one million dollars before he even threw his first collegiate pass.
Last year was considered a “down year” for quarterbacks, the usual recipients of the award, which begs the question if players from other positions could step in and make a real case for the trophy this season; here is what Vegas has to say.
C.J. Stroud (+250)
2022 Big Ten Football Conference Preview
Ohio State’s soon-to-be sophomore gunslinger totaled 4,435 yards, 46 touchdowns, and six interceptions in an extremely successful rookie campaign with the Buckeyes last season.
In his team’s two losses last season (to #5 Michigan and #12 Oregon), he threw for 878 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception, showing that he is not afraid of the moment— a quality that will allow him to build a case with an all-important “Heisman moment,” assuming that he is still as steady as he was and improved his game over the offseason.
Bryce Young (+400)
Everyone knew that Young was going to be up near the top after throwing for 4,872 yards, 47 touchdowns, and seven interceptions last season, one in which he won the Heisman award.
Only one player, Ohio State’s Archie Griffin, has won two Heisman awards, but Young’s production, and more importantly, his excellent situation, make him a legitimate threat to become the second on Griffin’s coveted list.
He will have a major opportunity to make a case when Alabama takes on Texas A&M in primetime, given the recent rift between head coaches Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher.
Caleb Williams (+1200)
2022 Pac-12 Football Conference Preview
The former Oklahoma-turned-USC quarterback burst onto the scene after stepping in for Spencer Rattler in a ridiculous 55-48 comeback victory against #21 Texas.
He only started eight games but finished with 1,912 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and four interceptions, as well as 442 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.
He will continue his partnership with head coach Lincoln Riley on the West Coast, although the decreased visibility could slightly hurt his case, along with the fact that USC is still not at a national championship-contending level.
D.J. Uiagalelei (+2500)
The Clemson gunslinger struggled mightily last season after being penned as a great replacement for Trevor Lawrence, throwing for 2,246 yards, nine touchdowns, and ten interceptions in a 9-3 season.
He has not lost the trust of his coaching staff yet and will be given another opportunity, but if he struggles early, he could be sent to the bench.
Tyler Van Dyke (+3000)
2022 ACC Football Conference Preview
Miami’s QB will usher in the Mario Cristobal era after stepping in admirably as a freshman in 2021, racking up 2,931 yards, 25 TDs, and six INTs.
Van Dyke is a strong arm player that can air it out all day long, so if he is in the proper system, he could easily throw for the most yards in the nation.
