It’s the final Grand Slam event of the season and all eyes are on Novak Djokovic as he attempts to complete what no other men’s tennis pro has done since Rod Laver in 1969. Laver was the last to win all four men’s singles Grand Slam events in a single season.
Djokovic heads into the 2021 US Open as a heavy favorite. He has been dominant thus far this season. With last year’s US Open winner Dominic Thiem out with a wrist injury, is there anyone that can challenge Djokovic?
Djokovic’s Quarter
Djokovic is a -141 favorite to capture this year’s US Open. He started the season with another Australian Open title, beat the world’s best on clay Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the French Open, and then ran roughshod through the field at Wimbledon.
With the draws released last week, Djokovic has a few road bumps in his quarter. Matteo Berrettini (+2000) who Djokovic beat in the Wimbledon final awaits as does Wimbledon semifinalist Hubert Hurkacz (+6000).
Top Contenders
If Djokovic is stopped in his attempt at Grand Slam greatness, it will likely be because of one of four contenders. Berrettini was already mentioned. Daniil Medvedev is next on the board after Djokovic listed at +400.
Medvedev is the overall No. 2 seed and has a draw that could find him in the US Open final again. Medvedev lost in 2019 to Nadal in a thriller. Marin Cilic, the 2014 US Open winner, is also in this quarter along with American John Isner.
Djokovic’s other competition will come from Alexander Zverev (+600) and Tsitsipas (+900). Zverev will have his hands full in his quarter should he meet up with last year’s US Open semifinalist Pablo Carreno, who isn’t even on the board.
Tsitsipas, who actually led Djokovic in that French Open final, may have the toughest time of all the top contenders making it out of his quarter. There is plenty of talent there including Andrey Rublev, who is listed at +2800. Rublev may be the biggest competition for Tsitsipas, but it will start early as the No. 3 seed draws legend Andy Murray in the first round.
Nick Kyrgios is also in Tsitsipas’s quarter. He is listed at +6000.

The Sleeper
As you look further down the board, it’s tough to identify many that can beat the world’s best tennis players. Djokovic has been dominant, but if there is one player that can hang with the contenders it is Felix Auger Aliassime.
The 21-year-old beat Zverev in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon and before bowing out in the next round to Berrettini, who he took to four sets. He has played Tsitsipas very close this season and would end up playing the Greek at some point if he can advance deep into the tournament.
Auger Aliassime is listed at +5000, which would be a nice payout should he pull the upset.
