UFC 269: Oliveira vs. Poirier Preview
Charles Oliveira (31-8-0)
Oliveira has had a long road to get where he is today. As the current lightweight champion, this will be his first battle defending since the defeat of Michael Chandler was only for the vacant title. His momentum coming into this fight is impressive, too, with nine straight on the line.
He also has one of the top resumes in the organization, with nine victories by knockout, 19 by submission, and three by decision. Oliveira is deadly on the ground, especially since he has the record in the UFC for both of the most finishes at 17 and the most submissions at 14.
“Do Bronx” looked great against Chandler, who is known to bring striking wars. In the past, that matchup could have ended differently since Oliveira has usually avoided striking wars.
Oliveira also has a history of “quitting” fights and not really giving his all. If the last battle against Chandler was any indication of his seriousness on staying the champion, Poirier needs to be ready.

Dustin Poirier (28-6-0)
Poirier has earned a ton of respect from fighters in the UFC and has really grown into being a fan favorite. In fact, he has won against every top challenger in the division that wants a shot at the belt.
During that run, he built his resume to 14 wins by knockout, seven by submission, and seven by decision. Even with the wins by knockout, he can still be a threat on the ground.
“Diamond” is excellent on his feet and no doubt has the power to prevail here. As long as the fight stays standing, then he has a real shot at dethroning Oliveira.
Poirier’s takedown defense will also be put to the test here. This was something that he struggled against when he fought with Khabib.
UFC 269 Betting Odds
Charles Oliveira (+135) vs. Dustin Poirier (-165)
Amanda Nunes (-900) vs. Julianna Pena (+600)
Geoff Neal (+100) vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio (-130)
Kai Kara France (+115) vs. Cody Garbrandt (-135)
Raulian Paiva (+250) vs. Sean O’Malley (-320)
The moneyline shows that Poirier is the favorite to claim the belt. It is not often that you see the current champion come into a fight as an underdog.
Oliveira vs. Poirier Prediction
Poirier wins the striking matchup, even with a reach and height disadvantage. He is arguably more technical in his approach and has the power to end it early.
Oliveira could shake this up and keep the fight on the ground. Poirier has issues in the past for not defending against takedowns, but this was also against a legend (Khabib). Look for Poirier to close it out by TKO.
