The New York Racing Association moved the race to Saratoga Race Course from 2024 to 2026 while Belmont Park was rebuilt. The new track opened for live racing on September 18, 2026, with four new racing surfaces: the main dirt track, two turf courses and a 1-mile synthetic oval.

The Belmont is the last leg of the Triple Crown and the oldest of the three. It was first run in 1867 at Jerome Park, six years before the first Preakness and eight before the first Kentucky Derby. In 2027 the 153rd Kentucky Derby is on May 1 and the 152nd Preakness moves to Sunday, May 23, so the Belmont comes 13 days after the Preakness. Belmont Stakes Day 2026 drew paid attendance of 46,128 and all-sources handle of $116,077,378, of which $50,876,383 was bet on the Belmont itself. At Belmont Park, Justify won the Triple Crown in 2018 over what NYRA calls the track’s 1 1/2-mile oval. Secretariat’s 31-length win in 1973 set the world record for 1 1/2 miles on dirt, 2:24.
How to bet the Belmont Stakes
Betting on the Belmont is pari-mutuel. Every dollar on a bet type goes into one pool, the track takes its cut, and the rest is shared among the winning tickets. So the odds move until the gate opens. The morning line is only the starting estimate from the track handicapper.
The straight bets are the place to start:
- Win: your horse must finish first. A $2 win bet on a 10-1 winner returns $22.
- Place: your horse must finish first or second.
- Show: your horse must finish in the top three.
- Across the board: win, place and show on one horse. It is three bets, so $2 across the board costs $6.
Exotics ask for more. The exacta, trifecta and superfecta need the first two, three or four finishers in exact order. The Daily Double and the Pick 3 to Pick 6 need the winners of consecutive races on the card, and the Belmont does not have to be one of them. A box covers every order of the horses you pick: a two-horse exacta box is two bets, and a three-horse trifecta box is six. Belmont Stakes odds and futures
No price on the 2027 Belmont is quoted here. As of September 24, 2026, we have no market we can source and date, and the field will not be set until after the Preakness.
Futures on a Triple Crown race are bet months ahead, on horses that may never make the starting gate. Golden Tempo is the reminder: he won the Kentucky Derby, did not run in the Preakness and still won the Belmont.
