World Series Betting Guide

World Series betting comes in two kinds: bets on the whole Series and bets on one game. Here is how each market settles, and what the 16 Series from 2010 to 2025 say about them.

The World Series bets you can make

The series price. A bet on which team wins the World Series. Before the pennants are decided it is a futures bet on any club still alive; once the two league champions are known, it becomes a two-way price on the pair, read like any moneyline. Our World Series odds page carries the current futures board. It settles when the Series ends, and it does not matter how many games that takes.

Series length and exact result. A length bet asks how many games the Series lasts: four, five, six or seven, or over or under a line such as 5.5 games. An exact-result bet adds the winner, one team in six games for example, and pays only if both parts are right. It pays more than the series price because it asks for more.

The game moneyline. A bet on who wins one game, extra innings included. A minus price is what you risk to win $100; a plus price is what $100 wins. In Game 3 of 2016, Cleveland was +195 at Chicago and won 1-0: $100 won $195 and returned $295. Our moneyline guide covers how to read the price and the chance it implies.

The run line. Baseball’s point spread, set at 1.5 runs. The favorite at -1.5 has to win by two or more; the underdog at +1.5 wins the bet if it wins the game or loses by one. Of the 95 World Series games from 2010 to 2025, 23 were decided by a single run. In every one of those, the +1.5 side won its bet, whichever team won the game.

The total. A bet on the runs both teams score together, over or under a number the book sets. It is settled on the final score, so extra innings count. A total set on a whole number, such as 8, can land exactly on it; that is a push and the stake comes back. Extra innings are not rare here: 13 of the 95 games went past nine, and two went 18.

MVP and props. The World Series MVP market is a bet on the player named most valuable after the last game. World Series prop bets cover everything else: a pitcher’s strikeouts over or under a number, a player to hit a home run, a game going to extra innings. A single-game prop settles on that game; a series prop, such as most hits across the Series, settles when the Series ends.

How the World Series is played

Best of seven: the first team to four wins takes it. The games follow a 2-3-2 pattern. The team that hosts Game 1 also hosts Game 2 and, if they are needed, Games 6 and 7; the other team hosts Games 3, 4 and 5. That pattern held in all 15 Series from 2010 to 2025 played in the two teams’ parks. The 2020 Series was played at a neutral site and is left out of every home and road figure on this page.

A Series that ends in five games gives the Game 1 host two home games and the other side three; only a sixth game sends it back. Before betting on the World Series game by game, check which games each side hosts.

What 16 World Series say

Seven games was the most common length. Of the 16 Series from 2010 to 2025, six went seven games, four went six, five went five, and one was a four-game sweep. That is 95 games in all, just under six a Series.

For a length bet, the spread matters more than the average. Ten of the 16 went six or seven games; six ended in five or fewer.

Game 1. The team that won Game 1 went on to win the Series 12 times in 16. The team that hosted Game 1 won it 9 times in 15, leaving out 2020. Sixteen Series is a small sample, and a series price after Game 1 already carries that result.

Home teams. Home teams won 41 of the 89 games played in the teams’ own parks, 46.1%. Over 15 Series, home field won fewer games than it lost.

2019. The road team won all seven games. Washington won Games 1 and 2 in Houston, lost all three at home, then won Games 6 and 7 in Houston. It is the only one of the 16 where the home side won nothing, and it is a fair reminder of what 89 games can and cannot tell you about home field.

What the prices say

ESPN stores pre-game prices for 60 World Series games from 2015 to 2025, from Bet365, ESPN BET and 5Dimes; it holds none for 2018. In 56 of them one side was the favorite; the other four were priced even.

Favorites won 32 of the 56, 57.1%. One unit on every favorite lost 1.24 units. One unit on every underdog lost 0.67. Both lost money, which is what the book’s margin does to a bettor who backs a side blind. Fifty-six games is too few to say one side is the better bet.

Totals. Across all 60 priced games, the over came in 29 times and the under 28, with three pushes. Close to even.

The longest underdog wins. The biggest price that won was Cleveland at +195, 1-0 at Chicago on October 28, 2016. Next came Washington at +175, 5-4 at Houston on October 22, 2019, and Washington again at +165, 12-3 at Houston the next night. Toronto at +160 beat Los Angeles 6-1 at Los Angeles on October 29, 2025, and Washington at +160 won 7-2 at Houston on October 29, 2019. No underdog priced past +195 won a World Series game in this data.

World Series prices sit close together. The median favorite in the 56 games was -145, a 59.2% chance before the margin comes out, and the most expensive was -227. At +195, the book gave Cleveland a 33.9% chance. The money is in the gap between our number and the book’s, not in which side is favored.
