White Sox vs Guardians Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
Back the White Sox to win Game 5 in Cleveland. Our number gives them 49.8%; the market gives them 43.6%.
DraftKings has Cleveland at -144 and Chicago at +119. Strip out the 4.7-point margin built into those two prices and the market gives the Guardians 56.4%. Our number gives them 50.2%. That leaves a 6.2-point gap on the White Sox side, over our 5-point threshold for a bet.
How the number is built
One clause: each club’s run-based win rate over the 2026 regular season, the two set against each other, then the home side moved up by how often home teams won this year.
Cleveland scored 678 runs and allowed 667 across 162 games. Raise runs scored to the power 1.83, divide by that plus runs allowed to the same power, and the Guardians come out at 50.7%. They actually went 85-77. Chicago scored 776 and allowed 720, a run-based rate of 53.4% against an 84-78 record.
Put those two rates on a neutral field and the Guardians win 47.3% of the time. Home teams won 52.9% of regular-season games in 2026, 1,284 wins and 1,145 losses. Fold that home edge into the neutral figure and Cleveland lands on 50.2%, Chicago on 49.8%.
Where the series stands
Two games each. Chicago took both games in Cleveland to open this best-of-five American League Division Series: 3-0 on Saturday 3 October, then 4-3 on Monday 5 October. Cleveland answered with two wins in Chicago, 9-3 on Wednesday 7 October and 9-5 on Thursday 8 October.
Game 5 settles it. The winner goes to the American League Championship Series and the loser’s season ends at Progressive Field on Saturday night.
The series has Cleveland ahead on runs, 21-15, with 18 of those 21 coming in the last two games. Four games are too few to move a number built on 162, and ours reads none of them. The method took the White Sox in Game 4 at -103 and lost; one result says nothing about it either way.
The starters
ESPN lists no probable starter for either side as of the read on 9 October. We name nobody.
Our number does not use the starters. It rests on what each club did over 162 games with every pitcher who took the ball. A named starter could move the price, and the price is where this bet lives or dies.
The season behind it
The Guardians were barely above even at home: 41-40, scoring 4.16 runs a game and allowing 4.31. The White Sox were 36-45 on the road, scoring 4.64 and allowing 4.85. Those splits cut each sample in half, so the method keeps the full season for both clubs.
The regular-season meetings went 7-6 to Chicago, and 4-3 to Cleveland in the seven played at Progressive Field. Thirteen games prove nothing. They are not in the number.
The price
The White Sox opened at +125 and the Guardians at -151. Read at 04:07 UTC on 9 October, DraftKings via ESPN, they were +119 and -144. The market has come a little towards Chicago since the open.
The market’s figure is the moneyline with its margin removed. At this read the margin is 4.7 points, and every break point below is measured with it.
Pick: White Sox +119
Bet the White Sox at +119. Ours is 49.8%, the market’s is 43.6%, and 6.2 points clears the 5-point threshold.
The bet holds down to +114. Shorter than that, at +113 or a favourite’s price, the gap drops under 5 and this is a pass. For the other side to become a bet, the Guardians would have to be +112 or longer.
What changes it
The price comes first. The read above is about 44 hours before first pitch. Chicago has already come in from +125 to +119 since the open, and the same move again would put them at +113, where the bet is gone.
Then the starters and lineups. Nothing on this page says who pitches or who plays, because nothing had been announced at the read. If one side names its best arm and the price swings, recheck it against +114 before betting.
The total
The total is 7, also its opening number, with the over at -117 and the under at -103. Pass on the total.
In the regular season the White Sox went over 7 in 100 of 162 games and the Guardians in 85 of 162. Those totals came from every starter in both rotations. A postseason total is set for the two starters named for the game, and a season of games cannot price that, so we pass on every postseason total.
