Guardians vs White Sox Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
Take the White Sox on the moneyline in Game 4, at -103. They stay a bet at -112 or any price that pays more. Our number has Chicago at 55.5%; the market, with its margin removed, has them at 48.5%.
DraftKings has the White Sox at -103 and the Guardians at -117. With the margin removed, that is 48.5% for Chicago. Our number is 55.5%. The gap is 7.0 points, and the threshold for a bet is 5.
How the number is built
The method in one clause: each team’s run-based win rate for the 2026 regular season, set against each other, then moved by how often home teams won this season.
The White Sox scored 776 runs and allowed 720 in 162 games. Runs scored to the power 1.83, divided by that figure plus runs allowed to the power 1.83, gives them a 53.4% run-based rate; they went 84-78. The Guardians scored 678 and allowed 667, which gives 50.7%; they went 85-77.
On a neutral field those two rates give the White Sox 52.7%. Home teams won 52.9% of regular-season games in 2026, 1,284 wins against 1,145 losses. That edge takes Chicago to 55.5%.
Where the series stands
The White Sox lead this best-of-five American League Division Series 2-1. They won the first two games in Cleveland, 3-0 on Saturday 3 October and 4-3 on Monday 5 October. On Wednesday 7 October at Rate Field, the Guardians won Game 3, 9-3.
Game 4 is at Rate Field on Thursday 8 October. A White Sox win ends the series and sends them to the American League Championship Series. A Guardians win forces Game 5 at Progressive Field on Saturday 10 October, which ESPN lists as “If Necessary”.
Our number reads none of it. It rests on 162 regular-season games for each team.
The starters
ESPN lists Parker Messick for the Guardians: a 2.56 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP over 186 1/3 innings in 32 starts, with 193 strikeouts and 49 walks. The White Sox start Hagen Smith. ESPN’s line for him does not add up (one start beside a 3-3 record), so we quote none of it.
Our number does not use the starters. It is built from what each team did across 162 games, with every pitcher each used.
The season behind it
The White Sox went 48-33 at home, scoring 4.94 runs a game and allowing 4.04. The Guardians went 44-37 on the road, scoring 4.21 and allowing 3.93. The method uses the full season for both, because a split halves the sample.
Chicago won the regular-season meetings 7-6: 4-2 at home, 3-4 in Cleveland. Thirteen games is too few to mean anything, and the method leaves them out.
The price
The White Sox opened at -107 and the Guardians at -113. Read at 07:21 UTC on 8 October, DraftKings via ESPN, they were -103 and -117. The market has moved a little towards Cleveland since the open.
The market’s figure is the moneyline with the margin taken out. Here the margin is 4.7 points.
Pick: White Sox -103
Bet the White Sox at -103. Our number for Chicago is 55.5% and the market’s is 48.5%: a 7.0-point gap against a 5-point threshold.
The bet holds at -112 or any price that pays more, measured with today’s margin taken out. Past -112 the gap falls under 5 points, and it becomes a pass. The Guardians would need +143 or longer to be a bet.
What changes it
The price first. A White Sox price shorter than -112 takes this under the threshold; the read above is about seventeen hours before first pitch, so check it again.
Then the lineups. A season of runs says how these two teams played from March to September, and nothing on this page says who is in either lineup. Check them before you bet.
The total
The total is 7.5, unchanged from the open, with the over at +101 and the under at -122. Pass on the total.
Over the season, 100 of 162 White Sox games went over 7.5, and 85 of 162 Guardians games. Those games were started by every pitcher in both rotations. A postseason total is set for the two starters named, so we pass on every postseason total, this one included.
