The moneyline is Miami -1650 and Pittsburgh +950. A book builds in a margin: its extra, which makes the two implied chances add to more than 100%. With that margin taken out, the market gives Miami a 90.8% chance to win and Pittsburgh 9.2%. ESPN’s FPI is a little higher on Miami, at 92.4% against 7.6%. Our method stakes the spread, so the moneyline is context only.

How 9.0 points is reached

Our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road. It counts FBS opponents only, across 2025 and 2026 together. Bowl and playoff games are treated as neutral and left out.

Miami is 8-1 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 23.3 points a game across 9 games. Pittsburgh is 5-2 on the road against FBS teams, winning by 5.4 a game across 7 games. Half the difference between 23.3 and 5.4 is 9.0. Both samples clear the 4-game minimum the rule sets.

This season so far

Nothing in this section is inside our number. Miami is 6-0, 4-0 in the ACC and 3-0 at home. It scores 48.5 points a game and allows 14.0. Against its five FBS opponents the margin is 27.4 a game; the sixth win was 77-7 over Florida A&M. Its most recent game was the closest: 43-35 over Florida State on 17 October.

Pittsburgh is 5-2 and 2-2 in the ACC, with a 4-1 home record. It scores 32.9 a game and allows 16.4, and its margin against FBS teams is 9.3 a game. It has lost its last two: 21-17 at home to North Carolina on 10 October, then 27-21 at Boston College on 17 October.

On this season alone the market has the better of the argument. Miami has won every FBS game by at least 8, and Pittsburgh enters off two losses. The case for Pittsburgh rests on the two-season sample.

Miami at home, Pittsburgh on the road

Two of Miami’s nine home games in the sample are from 2026: 52-3 over Central Michigan on 26 September and 43-35 over Florida State. The other seven are from 2025, and they include its one home loss in the span.

Pittsburgh’s road half is also mostly last season. In 2026 it won 35-33 at Virginia Tech on 2 October and lost 27-21 at Boston College. In 2025 it was 4-1 on the road. Seven games is a thin base, and the road half carries more weight per game than Miami’s nine.

The halves the method leaves out are Miami on the road and Pittsburgh at home. Miami’s 2026 road wins were 45-6 at Stanford, 33-20 at Wake Forest and 41-13 at Clemson.

Last season and the meeting

Miami went 13-3 in 2025, outscoring opponents 30.9 to 14.8 a game. Its postseason ran 10-3 at Texas A&M on 20 December 2025, then 24-14 over Ohio State and 31-27 over Ole Miss at neutral sites, before a 27-21 loss to Indiana on 19 January 2026.

Pittsburgh went 8-5, scoring 33.7 and allowing 24.8 a game. It closed with a 23-17 loss to East Carolina at a neutral site on 27 December 2025.

The teams met once in the span. Miami won 38-7 at Pittsburgh on 29 November 2025. That was a Pittsburgh home game, so the method does not use it. It is the strongest single piece of evidence against this pick.

Pick: Pittsburgh +19.5

Pittsburgh +19.5 at -105, DraftKings, read 22 October 2026 at 21:09 UTC. The line opened at Miami -23.5.

The gap is 10.5 points against a 3-point threshold. It rests on 16 games, split 9 and 7, and most of them are from 2025.

What kills the bet

The line. Pittsburgh stays a bet down to +12. Miami becomes the bet only at -6 or shorter. Between those two prices the gap is under the threshold, and the call is no bet.

The risk is this season. Miami has scored 40 or more in five of its six games and won last year’s game by 31. Our number trusts two seasons over this one.
