Sabres vs Canadiens Best Pick, Prediction and Odds

Bet the Sabres at +114, by the narrowest margin. Our number has this game at 50.0% each way; the price gives Buffalo 44.9%, a gap of 5.1 against a bar of 5.

The Montreal Canadiens are -135 and the Buffalo Sabres +114 at DraftKings. Strip out the margin and that is Montreal 55.1%, Buffalo 44.9%. Our number makes it a coin flip. A 5.1-point gap clears the threshold by 0.1, so this bet lives or dies on a single cent of price.

Where 50.0% comes from

The number is the average of two 2025-26 rates: the home team’s win rate in its own building and the visitor’s loss rate on the road. Overtime and shootout wins count as wins. Neutral-site games are in neither half, and neither team played one.

Montreal went 24-15-2 at the Bell Centre: 24 wins, 15 regulation losses, 2 after regulation, a 58.5% home win rate over 41 games. Buffalo went 24-13-4 on the road and lost 17 of 41, a 41.5% road loss rate. Average the two and each side is at 50.0%.

So the Canadiens were good at home. The Sabres were just as good away from Buffalo, and the price only pays for the first of those.

The margin is the cushion a book puts into both prices, so they add to more than 100%. At -135 and +114 they add to 104.2%. Removed, the Canadiens are 55.1% and the Sabres 44.9%.

There is a fair objection, and it comes from Tuesday. These two met at the Bell Centre on 13 October and Montreal won 4-3 in a shootout. That game, like the rest of this season, is not in the figures: our inputs are 41 Montreal home games and 41 Buffalo road games from 2025-26. Buffalo is 4-3-1 and won 5-4 in overtime in Toronto on Thursday. Montreal is 3-3-1 and lost 5-4 in Washington on Wednesday, so the Canadiens come in with two days off and the Sabres with one.

Montreal at home, Buffalo on the road

The goals lean a little toward Buffalo. At home the Canadiens scored 3.34 a game and allowed 3.10, a surplus of 0.24. The Sabres on the road scored 3.39 and allowed 2.98, a surplus of 0.41.

The other halves, which the method does not read: Montreal on the road went 24-9-8, also a 58.5% win rate, scoring 3.56 and allowing 3.15. Buffalo at home went 26-10-5, 63.4%, scoring 3.63 and allowing 2.90.

Buffalo ended the season three points ahead. The Sabres finished 50-23-9 with 109 points and outscored opponents by 47. The Canadiens finished 48-24-10 with 106 points and outscored opponents by 27. In the playoffs Buffalo beat Boston 4-2 and then lost 4-3 to Montreal. The Canadiens had beaten Tampa Bay 4-3 before that series, and went out 4-1 to Carolina after it.

The two won in different ways. Buffalo won 35 of its 50 games by two goals or more, went 15-3-9 in one-goal games, and won 8 of the 17 that went past regulation. Montreal went 23-6-10 in one-goal games and won 14 of the 24 that went past 60 minutes.

The regular season series was split 2-2. Two of the games were at the Bell Centre: Montreal won 4-2 on 20 October 2025 and Buffalo won 4-2 on 22 January. Those two are in our number. Buffalo’s 5-3 win on 15 January and Montreal’s 4-2 win on 31 January were in Buffalo and fall in neither half. The playoff series is not in the method either.

Pick: Sabres +114

Bet the Sabres on the moneyline at +114. The gap is 5.1 points toward Buffalo, against a threshold of 5.

The line opened at Canadiens -135 and Sabres +114 and had not moved when it was read on 16 October 2026 at 15:38 UTC, DraftKings via ESPN.

What kills the bet

One cent. Against Montreal at -135, Buffalo stays a bet at +113 and drops to a pass at +112. At +123 or longer the Sabres are a bet whatever the Canadiens are priced at.

For Montreal to become the bet, it would need to be +123 or longer as well. It is -135.

This is the thinnest kind of bet the method makes: a coin flip priced as a modest favourite. Lineups are the other unknown, and this page states nothing about who plays for either team on 17 October. Check both before you bet.

The total and the puck line

The total is 6.5, over -112 and under -108. The Canadiens’ games went over 6.5 in 44 of 82, the Sabres’ in 38 of 82. Montreal’s home games averaged 6.44 goals, Buffalo’s road games 6.37.

That is 53.7% and 46.3%, an average of 50.0%. With the margin out the over is priced at 50.4% and the under at 49.6%. A gap of 0.4 points toward the under. Pass on the total.

The puck line has Montreal -1.5 at +180 and Buffalo +1.5 at -218, which is 34.3% and 65.7% without the margin. The Canadiens won by two goals or more in 25 of 82 games. The Sabres lost by two or more in 20 of 82. Averaged, Montreal -1.5 lands 27.4% of the time against 34.3% priced, a gap of 6.8 points toward Sabres +1.5 at -218. Our method bets the moneyline only, so this is a lean on the same side as the pick. One bet on this game: the Sabres at +114.
