The larger offensive profile is still elite. New York leads MLB in slugging percentage and home runs, and that gives the Yankees a path to break open any matchup with one or two mistakes. Rice has 22 homers, Paul Goldschmidt is still hitting for average, and Cody Bellinger, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells, Jasson Domínguez, and DJ LeMahieu can keep the lineup functional even without the biggest names.
Cole gives New York the strongest individual edge in the game. He owns a 2.57 ERA and looked sharp in his last start, allowing two runs over six innings against the White Sox. The Tigers have been better lately, but Cole’s career success against Detroit and his ability to miss bats make this a difficult matchup for a lineup that is still short-handed.

Detroit also has injuries to Javier Báez, Gleyber Torres, Parker Meadows, Wenceel Pérez, Justin Verlander, Jack Flaherty, Reese Olson, Jackson Jobe, and others. Riley Greene, Dillon Dingler, Kevin McGonigle, Spencer Torkelson, Colt Keith, and Kerry Carpenter can still produce, but the lineup depth is not ideal.

The starting pitcher edge belongs to New York. Valdez can be effective, especially if he keeps the ball on the ground, but Cole is the more stable bet. He has the better ERA, better strikeout profile, and a much stronger matchup history against Detroit.
The offensive edge also leans Yankees, even with Judge and Stanton out. New York still has more power than Detroit, and Comerica Park’s deeper dimensions do not erase that advantage. The Yankees can score in bunches when Rice, Goldschmidt, Bellinger, Volpe, and Chisholm work ahead in counts.
Detroit’s path is to turn this into a low-scoring grind. Valdez needs early ground balls, the Tigers need clean defense, and the offense has to make Cole work instead of chasing. If Detroit gets to the Yankees bullpen by the sixth with the game tied, the underdog becomes much more interesting.

I lean Yankees moneyline at -126. The price is fair because Cole gives New York the better starting-pitcher setup, and the Yankees still have the better offensive ceiling even without Judge and Stanton. Detroit’s recent sweep is worth respecting, but this is a much tougher matchup than the White Sox series.
The Tigers are live because Valdez is coming off a good start and Detroit is playing with confidence at home. If Valdez keeps the ball on the ground and the Yankees continue to strand runners, the Tigers can keep this inside one swing. Still, I would rather back Cole at a manageable favorite price.
The total at 8.0 leans Under, but I do not love the number. Cole can control the Tigers, and Comerica Park helps suppress some cheap power. The risk is that Valdez’s inconsistency shows up against a Yankees lineup that still leads the league in slugging. My projection lands around Yankees 5, Tigers 3.
