Creighton Goes for 22nd Straight Win Over DePaul
Creighton will try to keep its fading Big East title hopes alive on Wednesday night when it hosts DePaul in Omaha, Neb.
The Bluejays (19-8, 12-4 Big East) are 2 1/2 games behind first-place St. John’s with four conference games remaining, while the Red Storm have just three left on their schedule. The odds are stacked against Creighton making a late run for the regular-season crown, but a favorable matchup against DePaul gives them a chance to stay in the hunt.
Creighton has completely dominated the series, winning 21 consecutive games over the Blue Demons and 26 of the past 27 meetings. The Bluejays handled DePaul with ease in their last matchup, securing a 73-49 road win on Jan. 21. In that contest, Jamiya Neal recorded 14 points and seven rebounds, while Ryan Kalkbrenner contributed 13 points and eight boards.
Kalkbrenner, who leads Creighton with averages of 18.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, played a pivotal role in the Bluejays’ most recent victory, an 80-69 home win over Georgetown on Sunday. After trailing by 10 points in the second half, Creighton used a strong push to regain control, led by Kalkbrenner’s 19 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.
“You don’t ever panic,” Creighton coach Greg McDermott said. “You try to do your job a little better. … But we don’t panic. Win a game, lose a game; good stretch, bad stretch, you gotta just move on to the next play.”
Neal nearly recorded a triple-double in the win over Georgetown, finishing with 13 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists.
DePaul Looks to Snap Its Losing Streak
DePaul (11-17, 2-15 Big East) enters Wednesday’s game on a five-game losing streak, marking its second such skid of the season. The Blue Demons have lost 14 of their past 16 games, with their latest defeat coming in an 84-72 loss to Butler on Saturday.
Despite the team’s struggles, sophomore guard Layden Blocker had a career-best performance against Butler, scoring 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including four made 3-pointers.
“I’ve been having some shooting slumps this year,” Blocker said. “But before the season, I was shooting pretty good, so I just got to get back into that rhythm and that confidence that I had preseason. So, just making the right reads, being confident, just shooting my shot.”

Blocker was also DePaul’s top scorer in the last meeting with Creighton, posting 15 points.
CJ Gunn, who had scored in double figures in 12 straight games before being limited to nine points against Butler, leads DePaul with an average of 12.2 points per game. NJ Benson contributes a team-high 6.1 rebounds per contest.
The Blue Demons will have to find a way to overcome their recent struggles if they want to end their long losing streak against Creighton. Otherwise, the Bluejays could be poised to extend their dominance and stay alive in the race for the Big East title.
