Avalanche Prepare for Pivotal Battle Against the Wild
The Colorado Avalanche are gearing up for a high-stakes showdown against the Minnesota Wild on Friday night, and the pressure is on. With the Central Division standings tightening, every point matters. Colorado currently sits in fourth place, holding the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference, but a win could push them closer to overtaking the Wild, who are just two points ahead with a game in hand.
Minnesota Struggles Amid Injury Concerns
The Wild have hit a rough patch, suffering back-to-back losses, including a tough 6-1 defeat against Utah on Thursday. Their offense has stalled, managing just one goal in their last two games since holding a 2-0 lead over Detroit earlier in the week.
To make matters worse, Minnesota is dealing with significant injuries. Star forward Kirill Kaprizov remains out with a lower-body injury, and center Joel Eriksson Ek recently landed on injured reserve with a similar issue. Despite missing time, Kaprizov still leads the team with 52 points, sharing the top spot with Matt Boldy.
Boldy has been a bright spot for the Wild, contributing 52 points (21 goals, 31 assists) this season. The 23-year-old winger recently represented Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off, showcasing his talent on the international stage. His teammate, Brock Faber, believes Boldy is still underrated across the league.

“He’s such a special player,” Faber said. “I don’t think he gets enough credit for how skilled and strong he is. He’s going to be one of the best in the world.”
With Kaprizov and Eriksson Ek out, Boldy and Marco Rossi (50 points) will need to step up to keep Minnesota competitive.
Avalanche Gain Momentum with Nichushkin’s Return
Colorado heads into this game with confidence after a dominant 5-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday. The biggest storyline? The return of forward Valeri Nichushkin, who played for the first time in nearly two months after recovering from a lower-body injury.
While Nichushkin didn’t register a point in his return, his presence was felt.
“He’s a total game-changer,” said Nathan MacKinnon, who had two goals and an assist against the Devils. “We’re just a different team when he’s in the lineup. He helps the second line so much, and he’s a beast on the ice.”

MacKinnon has been the driving force behind the Avalanche offense all season. With 90 points (23 goals, 67 assists), he currently leads the entire NHL in scoring. Defenseman Cale Makar is also putting up elite numbers with 66 points (22 goals, 44 assists).
With Nichushkin back in action, Colorado’s top six forwards are finally at full strength. However, their defensive core remains slightly depleted, as Josh Manson is still sidelined with a lower-body injury.
The Stakes Couldn’t Be Higher
Friday’s game is a golden opportunity for the Avalanche. Not only would a win close the gap in the standings, but it would also send a message as they head into the final stretch of the season. The Wild, despite their recent struggles, remain a dangerous team, and Colorado can’t afford to take them lightly.
With the return of Nichushkin and MacKinnon playing at an MVP level, the Avalanche have all the tools to capitalize on Minnesota’s recent dip in form. Now, it’s all about execution.
