Oilers Rest Stars, Look to Regain Rhythm
The Oilers (47-29-5, 99 points) are locked into the No. 3 seed in the Pacific Division and will face the Kings for the third consecutive postseason. Monday’s 5-0 loss to Los Angeles on home ice served as a reminder that despite the offensive firepower, momentum matters.
“We know who we’re playing… We’ll go out and do a job on the road,” said veteran Corey Perry. “We’ve been decent on the road and we know how to play just a boring style of hockey.”
In that loss, Edmonton rested stars Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, Mattias Ekholm, and Jake Walman. While Draisaitl is expected back for Game 1 of the playoffs, Ekholm will reportedly miss at least the opening round.
Calvin Pickard made 31 saves in Monday’s loss, and Stuart Skinner is expected to retake the crease once the postseason begins. Skinner has started the bulk of the season (50 games) but has posted modest numbers with a .894 save percentage and 2.87 GAA.
The Oilers have dominated San Jose this season, winning all three matchups while holding the Sharks to just two goals per game — including a 4-2 win last Friday and a 3-2 road victory earlier this month.
Sharks Eye Small Victory to End Difficult Season
For the Sharks (20-49-12, 52 points), Wednesday marks the end of a brutal campaign — one that saw them sink to the bottom of the NHL standings and extend their winless streak to 10 games (0-7-3). The last time San Jose won? March 27, in a shootout over Toronto.
Despite the losses, there have been bright spots. Rookie Macklin Celebrini, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, has emerged as a future cornerstone. His power-play goal Monday gave him 25 on the season and 63 points overall, tops on the team.
“I thought we competed,” said coach Ryan Warsofsky. “But your brains have to be on. It’s the NHL.”
Goaltender Alexandar Georgiev stopped 35 shots in the 2-1 OT loss to Vancouver, but his season-long struggles — a 7-18-4 record and .873 save percentage — tell the story of San Jose’s defensive woes.
Tyler Toffoli leads the Sharks with 30 goals, while William Eklund tops the assists chart with 41. But the team continues to deal with injuries, as four players were hurt in Sunday’s loss to Calgary, including Zack Ostapchuk and Thomas Bordeleau.

Two Teams, Two Different Timelines
While Edmonton eyes another deep playoff run, San Jose is simply looking for closure. The Oilers may rest key players again, but even a partial roster has been more than enough to handle the rebuilding Sharks this season. Still, the finale gives Edmonton one last opportunity to regain confidence before postseason pressure ramps up.
