The same bet lost on 10 October

We bet against Miami at home in their last game. The call was D.C. United at +500 on 10 October, and Miami won 4-0. The bet lost.

That result is inside today’s number. Miami’s home record went from 4-7-2 to 5-7-2 (wins, draws, defeats), their home scoring from 2.69 goals a game to 2.79 and their home conceding from 2.00 to 1.86. The method is unchanged, so this is the same kind of bet against a home record that is one win better. Our number gave D.C. United 36.6% that night. One game cannot show whether 36.6% was right.

How the number is built

The method in one sentence: a side’s expected goals are its scoring rate at the venue multiplied by the opponent’s conceding rate at the opposite venue, each taken relative to the league average, and a Poisson distribution (the standard model for counting goals) converts the two figures into the chance of a home win, a draw and an away win.

Both records are this season’s. Miami have played 14 home games in the 2026 MLS season and New York City 14 away, and the method uses the current season once a side has 6 games at the venue. The league averages cover 420 games: 1.85 goals a game for the home side and 1.40 for the visitor.
