Golden Tempo won the 152nd Derby on May 2, 2026, at 23-1, rallying from last to beat Renegade. His trainer, Cherie DeVaux, became the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner.
How the 2026 Kentucky Derby was won
Six Speed set the pace, with fractions of :22.68, :46.44 and 1:10.90, and Danon Bourbon took the lead at the top of the stretch before tiring. Ocelli, a maiden who drew into the field as an also-eligible, came out of the pack to challenge, and then Renegade and Golden Tempo swept past them both.
In the last yards it was brother against brother. Irad Ortiz Jr. was driving Renegade when Jose Ortiz came past on Golden Tempo, who ran the 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.27. Jose Ortiz had also won the Kentucky Oaks the night before on Always a Runner, the official report says.

The favorite, Further Ado, finished 11th. Golden Tempo, the first Derby winner sired by Curlin, earned $3.1 million from the race and went on to win the 158th Belmont Stakes at Saratoga, the New York Racing Association reports.

Bill Mott is the one trainer who appears twice in those eight years. Before DeVaux, female trainers had started 18 Derby horses, and the closest any had come was second, with Shelley Riley’s Casual Lies in 1992.
How to read Derby odds
Derby odds are quoted as odds to 1. At about 23-1, a $2 win bet on Golden Tempo returned $48.24 including the stake, and 23-1 implies a chance of about 4.2%. At 5-1, the implied chance is 16.7%.
The final price is set by the pool, so it moves until the gates open. A 2027 futures price taken now is a price on a 2-year-old who has not yet run the prep races that decide the field, and it is worth taking only when you rate the horse’s chance higher than the price does.
