The date is new. The Maryland Jockey Club announced on August 5, 2026, that the race moves to Sunday, eight days after the traditional third Saturday in May. In most years the new date falls on Memorial Day weekend.

The move changes the Triple Crown calendar. The 153rd Kentucky Derby is on Saturday, May 1, 2027, so the Preakness now comes 22 days after it. The 159th Belmont Stakes is on Saturday, June 5, at the new Belmont Park, 13 days after the Preakness. The club says the extra week opens the Preakness to horses whose trainers use modern training methods.
How the 2026 Preakness finished
The 151st Preakness was run on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Laurel Park, the first Preakness run there, while Pimlico is rebuilt. Fourteen three-year-olds started. Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo was not among them.

Napoleon Solo, owned by Gold Square LLC and ridden by Paco Lopez, took control entering the homestretch and pulled away. He had won the Champagne at Saratoga at 2 by 6 1/2 lengths, then finished fifth in both the Fountain of Youth and the Wood Memorial this year before the Preakness. A $2 win ticket paid $17.80, according to NBC Sports.
Taj Mahal, 5-1 on the morning line, finished 10th. Ocelli, fourth, had run third in the Kentucky Derby at 70-1 and still had not won a race.

Race-day odds work differently from a sportsbook line. North American racing is pari-mutuel, so the price moves with the money bet until the gate opens, and the morning line is only the starting estimate set by the track handicapper. The 2026 race showed the gap: Iron Honor was the 9-2 morning-line favorite and ran second, and the winner came from 8-1.
