Aaron Judge won the 2022 MLB American League MVP award. In early May, Judge was priced at nearly 10/1 odds to win the award. Bettors that jumped on those odds were rewarded by the end of the season.
Predicting the MLB American League MVP award is tough. The last player to win back-to-back AL MVP awards was Miguel Cabrera (2012 and 2013). In the last six years, six different players have won.
Top Contenders to Win the 2023 MLB AL MVP Award
There are four players priced under 10/1 odds to win the 2023 MLB American League MVP award.
Shohei Ohtani (+200)
Ohtani won this award in 2021. He was runner-up last season. Ohtani finished last season with a .273 batting average, 34 home runs and 95 RBIs. He also went 15-9 on the mound with a 2.33 ERA.
Mike Trout (+450)
Trout has won this award three times (2019, 2016 and 2014). Trout smashed 40 HRs last season, but only 80 RBIs. He also isn’t a threat to steal bases anymore and injuries have been an issue.
Aaron Judge (+450)
Judge had a historic 2022 and he got paid this offseason. Judge had a .311 batting average, 62 HRs and 131 RBIs last season. Will we get the 2018-19 Judge or the 2021-22 Judge this season?
Julio Rodriguez (+700)
Rodriguez was the 2022 AL Rookie of the Year. He finished the season with a .284 batting average, 28 HRs and 75 RBIs. He could take another leap forward, but winning the AL MVP might be a stretch.
2023 MLB American League MVP Predictions
Best Bet: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (+1200)
Guerrero Jr. finished last season with a .274 batting average, 32 HRs and 97 RBIs. There were huge expectations for Guerrero Jr. last season, but he failed to live up to them.
The only category Guerrero Jr. led the American League in last season was double plays grounded into (26). He still put up good numbers, but the Blue Jays need him to perform like he did in 2021.
In 2021, Guerrero Jr. led MLB in runs scored (123) and was tied for first in home runs (48). He also led the American League in OBP (.401), SLG (.601), OPS (1.002), OPS+ (167) and total bases (363).
He finished runner-up in the 2021 AL MVP race, losing to Ohtani.
If Guerrero Jr. produces like he did in 2021, he’ll have a great shot at winning his first AL MVP.
The Blue Jays are going to contend for the AL East crown and they’ll hope to make a deeper run into the playoffs. For that to happen, Guerrero Jr. will need to have a monster season at the plate.
