We’re going to analyze the futures betting odds for the 2023 MLB National League Cy Young market. We are also going to predict the winner of the 2023 NL Cy Young award.
Sandy Alcantara unanimously won the 2022 NL Cy Young award.
Alcantara had an incredible season. He went 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA and 0.980 WHIP for Miami. He led all pitchers and ranked third in the Majors in WAR (8.0). He also led the league in complete games (6).
Top Contenders to Win the 2023 NL Cy Young Award
There are five pitchers priced at 10/1 odds or lower to win the National League Cy Young award.
Sandy Alcantara (+450)
Max Scherzer (2016 and 2017) and Jacob deGrom (2018 and 2019) have both recently won back-to-back NL Cy Young awards. Alcantara is favored to repeat this season and he has a great chance.
Alcantara is a workhorse. One area he could improve upon is strikeouts per nine innings (8.1 in 2022).
Corbin Burnes (+500)
Burnes led the NL in strikeouts (243) last season. He went 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA and 0.965 WHIP. He finished seventh in NL Cy Young voting in 2022, but needs better numbers to win in 2023.
Justin Verlander (+600)
Verlander won the 2022 AL Cy Young award and now he’s with the Mets. Verlander easily led the Majors in ERA (1.75) and WHIP (0.829) last season. He’s going to be in contention for the 2023 NL Cy Young.
Max Scherzer (+800)
Scherzer struggled with oblique injuries in his first season with the Mets last year. He went 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA and 0.908 WHIP. He finished the season with 173 strikeouts (10.7 SO/9).
If Scherzer can play a full season, he’ll be in the Cy Young with his new teammate Verlander.
Max Fried (+1000)
Fried finished runner-up in NL Cy Young voting last year. He went 14-7 with a 2.48 ERA and 1.014 WHIP for the Braves. Unless his strikeout numbers improve, he won’t win the NL MVP in 2023.
2023 MLB National League Cy Young Predictions
Best Bet: Julio Urias (+2000)
Urias has never won a Cy Young award, but he was third in voting last season. Urias went 17-7 with a 2.16 ERA (Led NL) and 0.960 WHIP. He had 166 strikeouts in 175 innings for the Dodgers.
Urias wins a lot of games with the Dodgers. If he can keep his ERA down this season and improve upon some of his numbers, he will contend for the 2023 NL Cy Young and his odds are enticing at 20/1.
It’ll be tough with Verlander now in the NL, but Urias has been excellent the last two seasons.
