One of the best of the best is Santa Anita Park in Southern California. It is only fitting that this Saturday’s race card has five different graded events. Leading the way is the Malibu Stakes. Another popular race on the card is the annual San Antonio Stakes. The entire day of racing at Santa Anita offers a great way to close things out.

2020 Malibu Stakes Predictions

When: Saturday, December 26th 2020

The Malibu is the featured race on Saturday’s card as a Grade 1 event for three-year old Thoroughbreds. The race is a seven furlong sprint on the dirt track at Santa Anita. A tight field of six contenders are listed as entered.

Famed trainer Bob Baffert will have two entries in this race headlined by Charlatan breaking from the No. 4 post. Veteran jockey Mike Smith is slated to get the ride. The son of Speightstown was hot on the 2020 Kentucky Derby Trail after winning the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on May 2.

Injuries sidelined the Kentucky-bred colt for the rest of the season but he has a chance to go a perfect four-for-four in his three-year old campaign with a win in Saturday’s return to the track.

Baffert’s other entry is Thousand Words. This was another Kentucky Derby contender with a strong start to this year’s prep schedule. The three-year old Florida-bred colt won the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita before finishing fourth in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at this track in early March.

The son of Pioneer of the Nile missed the Kentucky Derby and he went on to finish a disappointing eighth in the Preakness Stakes. Breaking from the No. 2 post with jockey John Velazquez, he sets ups the Baffert exacta for Saturday’s main event.

A few other horses to watch in this race are Nashville and Independence Hall.

2020 San Antonio Stakes Predictions

When: Saturday, December 26th 2020

This Grade 2 event is open to Thoroughbreds three and older. It will be contested on the dirt covering 1 1/16 miles in total distance.

The field for this race is set as well with eight entries. Baffert could have the top horse in this race as well with Mucho Gusto breaking form the No. 8 post. The four-year old colt will have Velazquez as his jockey in this race.

The son of Mucho Macho Man has not raced since late February when he placed fourth in the Saudi Cup. That race was won by Maximum Security. His biggest victory of the season came in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup at Gulf Stream Park against a very talented field. Saturday’s race is considered to be a prep for the 2021 Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 23.

His biggest competition in the San Antonio should come from trainer Mark Glatt’s Sharp Samurai. This six-year old gelding actually has the highest Horse Racing Nation rating in this field at 7.44.

Going back to August of last year, he has finished in the money in his last six graded events. This includes a third-place finish in the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland. You could add Midcourt to the mix when it comes to filling out a strong trifecta play for this race.
