NASCAR Preview: 2021 Pennzoil 400 Picks

The 2021 NASCAR Florida swing is over after three weeks of racing in the Sunshine State! Now it’s time for the Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Joey Logano has won two of the last four races at Las Vegas and is hoping to add a third but oddsmakers think he’s going to have trouble doing so.

That’s because Las Vegas has seen a nice variety of drivers winning there over the last ten races including Kurt Busch who is the defending track winner. Bush does not make the top-five favorites list coming in at +1800.

The favorite is Martin Truex Jr at +550. Truex has won twice at Las Vegas as he took home the win in 2017. Logano comes into the race weekend at +750 along with his Penske teammate Brad Keselowski. Out of the last five races at Vegas, Logano has his double following Truex’s checkered in 2017 but it was Keselowski who won at the track in 2016.

That gives Penske three of the last four wins at Las Vegas which is an impressive stat to make note of. Another statistic to be aware of is that Kevin Harvick (+650) has dual wins at Las Vegas with one in a Ford and one in a Chevrolet. Here are the top-five favorites at +800 and under at Intertops.

Martin Truex Jr +550

Kevin Harvick +650

Kyle Larson +700

Brad Keselowski +750

Joey Logano +750

Of the five drivers listed above, only Kyle Larson has yet to win at Vegas. But, with him being in a Chevrolet the trend continues for the fourth week in a row. All three, Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota are represented in the top-five favorites.

2021 Pennzoil 400 Predictions

Kevin Harvick +650

Kevin Harvick has not won this season but he has cranked out three finishes in the top-six. That shows his team has been able to dial his car in and make the moves to keep him towards the front on three different types of race tracks. Harvick’s second Vegas win came back in 2018. Since then he’s finished 10th and 8th last year followed by 2nd , 4th , and a 39th when he was taken out in a crash halfway through the race.

Joey Logano +750

Joey Logano didn’t have the greatest weekend last week at Homestead due to a handling issue. His car never came around for him to make a charge for the win. Las Vegas is a different animal and he’s won there twice recently. He’s also highest among active drivers with an 8.4 average finish at Las Vegas.

Ryan Blaney +1000

Ryan Blane has finished 10 or better in six of his nine races at Las Vegas including a pole. He is also a driver that improves his position from beginning to end at the track. His average starting position is 12.4 but his average finish is a 9.7. Here is an eye-opener – he’s completed 99.9% of all laps in the Cup Series races he’s run at Las Vegas; 2407 out of 2409.

Others to Consider: I like Kyle Larson at any time he runs on a 1.5-mile track. He’s beginning to show off his skills again in better Hendrick equipment. Martin Truex Jr is the favorite and he ran well at Homestead with a 3rd place finish. I’m just waiting to see if he and his team can pull some consistency together with their runs.
