PGA Preview: 2021 Phoenix Open Predictions

It’s a PGA version of professional wrestling! The Waste Management Phoenix Open is known for its rowdy fans and intense pressure at the No. 16 par 3 green which is surrounded by grandstands… drinking beer. The good news, fans will be back, in limited numbers, this weekend at Phoenix. So will Jon Rahm who comes in at +650!

Like last year, Rahm came in as the favorite following a slight meltdown at the Farmers the week prior. The situation is similar, Rahm didn’t meltdown last weekend but he did fade a bit as Patrick Reed went on a birdie fest.

Rahm now has a chance to take being the outright favorite to the bank as Justin Thomas trails at +800 and last year’s Phoenix Open champ, Webb Simpson, is at +1200. Here are the top-five favorites according to Intertops.

Jon Rahm +650

Justin Thomas +800

Xander Schauffele +1000

Rory McIlroy +1000

Webb Simpson +1200

Fans will be allowed but in limited numbers at TPC Scottsdale. It will be interesting to see how players react to crowd noise. A player hearing a “roar” from across the course and wondering what happened is an element that has been missing due to COVID-19.

Now the “Biggest Party in Golf” will have 5000 fans allowed per day. That’s not many for a tournament that regularly has attendance numbers of half a million. The No. 16 Colusium hole will only have one tier with a maximum of 2000 fans but it should be a rowdy place – hopefully.

The hole is famous for players like Tiger Woods and Jarod Lyle causing the crowd to erupt when sinking a hit a hole-in-one. On the flip side, Justin Leonard gave the crowd a one-fingered salute when they booed him for a bad shot.

Expect the norm at Phoenix. Pristine look with rolling hills, big bunkers, tight landing areas, and players looking to slam the ball as far as they can off the tee. Generally, TPC Scottsdale plays like a classic course but makes full use of natural hazards… which include the fans on No. 16.

One Phoenix Open note to keep in mind; four of the last five contests have finished in a playoff.

2021 Phoenix Open PGA Picks

Justin Thomas +800

Justin Thomas missed the cut at Dubai but has had some time off to rest a bit. He’s made a habit of finishing the Phoenix Open in 3 rd place over the years so he knows this course and how to attack it. A few birdies may put him over the hump this year. He has a T2, a 3 rd , and a 4 th place finish this year.

Xander Schauffele +1000

Xander Schauffele was on my radar last week and it was a good gut choice. This week I even feel better about Schauffele. Last week at the Farmers he climbed the leader board to finish T2 along with Ryan Palmer and two others. He was strong but needs a few more putts to drop for him this week.

Ryan Palmer +4000

Ryan Palmer, +4000, is coming in hot this week at Phoenix. He’s played some amazing golf this season with only a few bumps. In his last four tournaments, he’s racked up a T2 and two T4’s. He finished T2 at the Phoenix Open back in 2015. His recent T2 was last week at the Famers.

Others I Like: I faded last week on Jon Rahm (+600) but like him a bit more this week. He’s strong at Phoenix. Brooks Koepka (+4000) could use the crowd noise as motivation as he continues to recover. If he’s on point the fans will get behind him.
