With the MLB lockout ended, the 2022 season will finally get underway on April 7. The season will see a full 162 games played and will end on Oct. 5.
There were some changes included in the new collective bargaining agreement. The designated hitter will now expand to the National League and will be universal. Also, the postseason has been expanded to include a total of 12 teams, six from each league.
With spring training underway, here’s a look at the updated 2022 MLB World Series futures odds.
Dodgers Remain Favorites to Win 2022 MLB World Series
For most of the 2021 MLB season, the Los Angeles Dodgers were the overall betting favorite. They were on track to get back to the World Series before Atlanta sent them home. The Dodgers roster is still full of All-Star talent despite losing SS Corey Seager to Texas and P Max Scherzer to the Mets.
The Dodgers are listed at the top of the board at +500 due to their lineup still being loaded. They also signed Daniel Hudson and Andrew Heaney this offseason. The big addition, of course, is former NL MVP and World Series champion Freddie Freeman. If P Clayton Kershaw re-signs, the pitching staff will be that much better.
The Contenders
The only other teams on the board at better than +1000 odds are Houston and the New York Yankees. The Yankees are like the Dodgers with a lineup full of star power. Big hitters Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge return and Gerrit Cole could be the best pitcher in baseball. That’s why the Yankees are listed at +900.
Houston, which lost to Atlanta in last year’s World Series, checks in at +1000. The Astros offense is outstanding. They led the league in runs per game last year with All-Stars like Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Yordan Alvarez, and Kyle Tucker. They also get P Justin Verlander back after Tommy John surgery.
Best of the Rest
The Mets had a busy offseason shoring up the pitching staff by adding Scherzer who was simply outstanding after last year’s All-Star break. The Mets also added Mark Canna, Starling Marte, and Eduardo Escobar. That has moved the Mets World Series odds from +2000 all the way to +1000.
Toronto (+900) might have the best young talent in the game. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette combine with veterans like George Springer and Jose Berrios to give the Blue Jays a legitimate shot at a title. Toronto also got right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman to add to the pitching rotation and replace Robbie Ray. They also recently brought in 3B Matt Chapman.
Don’t forget defending World Series champ Atlanta (+1000). Yes, they lost Freeman, but they will have Ronald Acuna Jr. back and healthy.
