Guardians vs Rays Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
No bet on Game 2 at Tropicana Field. After Cleveland’s Game 1 win the Rays are priced below our number, but not far enough below it to back them.
DraftKings has the Rays at -137 and the Guardians at +114. Those two prices carry a 4.5-point margin. Remove it and the market reads Tampa Bay 55.3%, Cleveland 44.7%. Ours reads 57.7% and 42.3%. That leaves the Rays 2.4 points better than their price says, and we bet at 5.
What Game 1 changed
The Guardians won 7-3 on Monday and lead the series 1-0.
Our number did not move. It is built from the 162 games each club played in the 2026 regular season, and Game 1 is not one of them. It read 57.7% for the Rays before Game 1 and it reads 57.7% now.
The market moved. At our Game 1 read it made Tampa Bay 59.9%, which was 2.2 points above ours. At this read it makes them 55.3%, which is 2.4 points below. The lean has changed sides, from Cleveland to Tampa Bay, without either gap reaching 5.
Game 1 has no bet of ours to settle. That page said: “No bet at Rays -168 or Guardians +138.” Its lean was to Cleveland, by 2.2 points, and Cleveland won at a price we did not take. The page also passed on the total of 7, and the game finished with 10 runs.
How Game 1 went
Tampa Bay scored twice in the first inning and led 2-0 through five. Cleveland then scored in each of the last four innings: one in the sixth, one in the seventh, two in the eighth and three in the ninth. The Guardians had 14 hits to the Rays’ 7.
Drew Rasmussen started for the Rays and was charged with two runs in six innings. The five relievers who followed him were charged with five runs in three innings. Tyler Wells took the loss. Cleveland’s Foster Griffin went four innings and allowed two runs, and five relievers covered the last five for one run. Hunter Gaddis got the win.
One game is one game, and it is not in the number.
How the number is built
Three steps, the same on every baseball page. Rate each club on the runs it scored and allowed in the 2026 regular season, put the two rates against each other, then add the edge home teams earned across the league this year.
Tampa Bay scored 736 runs and allowed 650 in 162 games. Runs scored to the power 1.83, divided by that figure plus runs allowed to the same power, gives the Rays 55.7%. Their 98-64 record is a 60.5% rate. Cleveland scored 678 and allowed 667: 50.7% by runs, 52.5% by an 85-77 record.
On a neutral field those rates make Tampa Bay 54.9% to win. Home teams went 1,284-1,145 in the 2026 regular season, a 52.9% rate, and with that added the Rays reach 57.7%.
The starters
ESPN lists Parker Messick for Cleveland and Freddy Peralta for Tampa Bay.
Messick, a left-hander, made 32 starts in the 2026 regular season: 12-9 with a 2.56 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP over 186.1 innings, 193 strikeouts and 49 walks. Peralta, a right-hander, also made 32: 10-11 with a 4.42 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP over 169.0 innings, 156 strikeouts and 63 walks.
Neither line is in the 57.7%. The method rates clubs on a full season of runs, whoever pitched, and no number on this page moves with the name. The market does price the starter. One reading of a 55.3% price on a club our method makes 57.7% is that it carries Messick’s season against Peralta’s as well as Game 1. That is a reading, and we have not measured it.
The season behind it
The Rays went 55-26 at home in the regular season, scoring 4.60 runs a game and allowing 3.98. The Guardians went 44-37 on the road with 4.21 scored and 3.93 allowed. The method uses the full season for both, because a split cuts each sample in half.
The clubs met six times in the regular season and Tampa Bay won five, three of them at home in July. Six games are too few to move a rate built on 162, and they are already inside each club’s season totals.
The price
The Rays opened at -134 and the Guardians at +111. At 04:29 UTC on 13 October DraftKings, via ESPN, had them at -137 and +114.
The market’s percentages here are the moneyline with its margin removed. The margin was 4.5 points at this read, and the two prices under the pick are worked out with it.
Pick: No bet
No bet at Rays -137 or Guardians +114. The lean is to Tampa Bay, by 2.4 points: ours is 57.7% for the Rays and the market’s is 55.3%. The threshold is 5.
The Rays become a bet at -122 or longer. The Guardians become one at +157 or longer. At any price between those two, pass.
What changes it
The price is the first thing. The read is about 19 and a half hours before first pitch. Tampa Bay needs another 15 cents, from -137 to -122, before it is worth a bet. Cleveland is 43 cents short of +157.
The starters are the second. A change of either would move the market and would not move our number. If either name changes, compare the new price with -122 and +157 before taking a side.
The total
The total is 7, where it opened. The over is -102 and the under -117, from -105 and -115 at the open. Pass on the total.
In the regular season the Rays went over 7 in 83 of 162 games and landed on it in 21. The Guardians went over in 85 and landed on it in 17. Those counts include every pitcher either club used all year. A postseason total is set on the two starters of the night, which a season count cannot see, so we pass on every postseason total. Game 1 went over 7 and does not change that rule.
