No bet at DAL -9.5 – Wings at Storm prediction and odds

Last Updated on

No bet: the line posted at Dallas -9.5, and this page said before it posted that anything from -5 out was a pass.

DraftKings now has Dallas -9.5 with a total of 170.5, read at 20:59 UTC on 22 September. Dallas also played in Phoenix on Monday and lost 87-86, which is in the figures below. The market is four points past my number, not short of it, and that is the whole story here.

The number

My figure compares like with like. Dallas has a winning record, so I take Seattle’s home games against winning teams. Seattle has a losing record, so I take Dallas’s road games against losing teams. Half the difference between the two average margins is the number.

Seattle is 3-8 in those eleven home games and loses them by 4.8 points on average, unchanged since Monday because Seattle did not play. Dallas was 7-1 in its eight road games against losing teams at plus 6.5; Phoenix makes it 7-2 in nine at plus 5.7. Half the difference is Dallas by 5.2, down from the 5.65 published.

I play a side when my number and the price are at least a point apart, which at Dallas by 5.2 makes Dallas a bet at -4 or shorter and a pass from -4.5 out. The posted -9.5 is four and a quarter points past my number, so it is not close. ESPN’s matchup predictor gave Dallas 74.1% when this was written.

The 37-point game

Seattle’s eleven home games against winning teams include a 114-77 loss to Las Vegas on 17 September. Without it, the other ten average a 1.6-point loss and my number falls to Dallas by 3.6. That is the direction that matters here: every way of cutting it puts my number further from -9.5, not nearer.

The number counts every game, as this method always does. A reader who wants the margin of safety should know that one result is doing a lot of the work, and that taking it out makes the posted price look worse, not better.

Seattle’s season

The Storm are 8-35, the worst record in the league, and have lost four in a row. They are 2-8 over the last ten, losing by 9.9 a game, and the three most recent were all against teams with winning records: 114-77 and 98-77 to Las Vegas and 70-57 to Golden State.

At home they are 6-15 and lose by 2.4, which is the one part of their record that is close to respectable.

Dallas has won all three meetings

Dallas won 79-56 at home on 1 June, 112-110 in Seattle on 22 June and 92-70 at home on 23 August. The one game in Seattle was the close one.

The Wings won six in a row before losing 87-86 in Phoenix on Monday, and are 26-17. Their weakness is the road, where they are 10-11 and lose by 1.4 a game, and that record is almost entirely a record against good teams: 3-9 against winning sides away from home, 7-2 against the rest.

The total

The total is 170.5. Dallas games have a median total of 172 this season and Seattle’s 167. Over the last ten, Dallas’s games have averaged 171.1 and Seattle’s 169.3. The posted number sits inside that spread, so no total play.

Seattle’s games sit among the lowest-scoring in the league, and the one meeting in Seattle produced 222 points. That is one game.

No bet at Dallas -9.5

No bet. The call published on 21 September was Pick: Dallas Wings, at -4.5 or shorter, with the stated condition that a line of Dallas -5 or longer is a pass. DraftKings posted Dallas -9.5. The pick does not clear the price it set itself, and it is not a near miss.

What about the other side? My number would make Seattle a bet at plus 9.5, by more than four points. I am not making that call. Seattle have lost four in a row by 9.9 a game and the market has moved four points away from a number built on their season-long home form, which is a reason to think the number is behind the team rather than ahead of the price. When our own two readings disagree that far, we pass. The original call is left above exactly as it was published.
