No bet. Gardner-Webb has three road games against FBS teams, too few for our number to price this one.
Marshall is a 23.5-point favourite over Gardner-Webb at DraftKings, and the line has not moved since it opened. Our number is Marshall by 11.8, 11.7 points short of the line. It makes no bet. The method needs at least 4 games in each sample before it prices a side, and Gardner-Webb has 3.
How the number is built
The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
Marshall is 3-3 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 1.8 points a game across 6 games. Gardner-Webb is 0-3 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 21.7 a game across 3 games. The difference is 23.5 points. Half of it is 11.75, which rounds to 11.8.
Three games is the whole Gardner-Webb sample
Gardner-Webb plays outside the FBS, so the method has almost nothing to go on for this side. Three games prove little. It lost 59-12 at Georgia Tech on 6 September 2025, 52-35 at Ohio on 20 September 2025, and 24-23 at Liberty on 12 September this year.
The three margins were 47, 17 and 1. The most recent is the closest, and one result cannot say whether that is a trend.
Marshall at home
Marshall’s home margins against FBS teams are small in both directions. It beat Old Dominion 48-24, Texas State 40-37 and, on 12 September, Middle Tennessee 28-26. It lost 21-20 to Missouri State, 35-23 to James Madison and 24-19 to Georgia Southern.
Only one of those six games was decided by more than 12 points: the 24-point win over Old Dominion. The spread asks Marshall to win by 24 or more.
2026 so far
Marshall is 2-1, all three against FBS teams. It lost 45-0 at Penn State, then beat Middle Tennessee and won 30-24 at Missouri State on 19 September. It has scored 19.3 a game and allowed 31.7.
Gardner-Webb is 1-3. It lost 35-17 at Austin Peay, 17-13 at Wofford and the one-point game at Liberty, then beat North Carolina Central 44-20 at home. It has scored 24.2 a game and allowed 24.0.
Last season
Marshall went 5-7 in 2025 and outscored its opponents by 0.5 a game. Gardner-Webb went 7-5 and was outscored by 2.2 a game.
The two teams did not meet in 2025 or so far in 2026.
The price
Marshall is -23.5, the same as at the open, read 24 September 2026 at 04:29 UTC at DraftKings via ESPN. Both sides are priced at -110.
The moneyline has Marshall at -2400 and Gardner-Webb at +1200, unchanged from the open. With the margin removed, that prices Marshall to win 92.6% of the time. ESPN’s FPI has Marshall at 85.3%.
Nobody here doubts who wins. The question is whether a team that has won its FBS home games by 1.8 a game wins this one by 24.
Pick: no bet
No bet on the spread. Our number rests on 9 games, split 6 and 3, and the method makes no bet when either sample is under 4 games.
Marshall’s six are the stronger half: only one was decided by more than 12 points. Gardner-Webb’s three were losses by 47, 17 and 1, and results that far apart cannot price a 23.5-point line.
What changes it
This game does, once it is played. It would be Gardner-Webb’s fourth road game against an FBS team, enough for the method to price the next one.
Before kickoff, no line changes the call. The gap is 11.7 points and it rests on 3 Gardner-Webb games.
The total
The total is 50.5, unchanged from the open, over and under both at -110.
Against FBS teams across 2025 and 2026, Marshall’s games went over 50.5 in 9 of 14. Gardner-Webb’s three FBS games produced 71, 87 and 47 points, two of three over. Marshall’s three games this season produced 45, 54 and 54.
Lean over 50.5. Marshall’s 9 of 14 is the larger sample, and Gardner-Webb’s small one points the same way.
