Our number has Houston by 5.7. At +18.5, take Georgia Southern.
No. 25 Houston is an 18.5-point favourite at DraftKings, from 19.5 at the open. Our number is Houston by 5.7. The gap is 12.8 points, and the threshold for a bet here is 3.
How the number is built
The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.
Georgia Southern is 3-2 at home against FBS teams over that span, losing by 1.8 points a game across 5 games. Houston is 6-1 on the road against FBS teams, winning by 9.6 a game across 7 games. The difference is 11.4 points in Houston’s favour. Half of it is 5.7.
Both samples are small, at 5 and 7 games. All five Georgia Southern home games come from 2025: its only home game this season was a 31-0 win over Charleston Southern, a team outside the FBS.
Houston on the road
Houston is good away from home. It went 6-0 on the road in 2025, and the one road loss in the sample is this season’s 28-26 at Texas Tech on 18 September.
The spread asks something else: whether Houston wins by 19 or more. In 7 road games against FBS teams it did that twice, 35-9 at Rice and 39-17 at Oklahoma State. The other road wins were 27-24 at Oregon State, 24-16 at Arizona State, 30-27 at UCF and 31-24 at Baylor.
Georgia Southern’s home games were close, with one exception. It beat Jacksonville State 41-34, Georgia State 41-24 and Coastal Carolina 45-40, and lost 38-35 to Southern Miss. The exception was a 45-10 loss to Old Dominion, and it moves the home average by itself.
2026 so far
Houston is 2-1. It beat Oregon State 33-20 and Southern 77-6 at home, then lost at Texas Tech. Against its two FBS opponents it scored 29.5 a game and allowed 24.0.
Georgia Southern is 1-2, and 0-2 against FBS teams, with both losses on the road: 22-7 at Clemson and 31-27 at Jacksonville State. Against those two it scored 17.0 a game and allowed 26.5. This is not a conference game: Houston plays in the Big 12, Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt.
Last season
Houston went 10-3 in 2025 and won by 6.2 points a game. It ended with a 38-35 win over LSU on 27 December at a neutral site. At home it was 3-3.
Georgia Southern went 7-6 and lost by 4.4 a game, 4-2 at home and 2-4 on the road. It ended with a 29-10 win over App State on 29 December, also at a neutral site. The two teams did not meet in 2025 or so far in 2026.
The price
Houston opened at -19.5 and is -18.5 now, read 24 September 2026 at 04:29 UTC at DraftKings via ESPN. That is a 1-point move toward Georgia Southern. Both sides of the spread are priced at -110.
The moneyline has Houston at -1050 and Georgia Southern at +675, from -1600 and +900 at the open. With the margin removed, that prices Houston to win 87.6% of the time. ESPN’s FPI has Houston at 87.9%.
Houston is the likelier winner by every measure here, ours included. The disagreement is over the size of the win: 18.5 against 5.7.
Pick: Georgia Southern +18.5
Georgia Southern +18.5 at -110. The gap is 12.8 points against a 3-point threshold.
It rests on 12 games, split 5 and 7. Houston has won by 19 or more on the road twice in seven tries, and the price asks for it again.
What changes it
A line move toward Georgia Southern, and it would take a large one. At +9 the gap is 3.3 and the bet stands. At +8.5 it is 2.8, and the call becomes a pass.
Availability is the other thing, and this page does not state it. Check the injury report before you bet.
The total
The total opened at 55.5 and is 56.5 now, with both sides at -110.
Against FBS teams across 2025 and 2026, Houston’s games went over 56.5 in 4 of 14, and Georgia Southern’s in 7 of 14. Houston’s two FBS games this season produced 53 and 54 points. Georgia Southern’s produced 29 and 58.
Lean under 56.5. Houston’s games stayed under it 10 times in 14, and Georgia Southern’s sample splits evenly. It is a lean, not a bet.
