How Utah by 5.2 is reached

The method takes the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, over 2025 and 2026 together, and halves the difference. Bowl and playoff games are neutral and stay out.

Utah is 7-1 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 21.5 points a game. Houston is 8-1 on the road against FBS teams, winning by 11.1. Half the difference between 21.5 and 11.1 gives Utah by 5.2. Against Utah -6.5, the gap is 1.3 points toward Houston.

2026 so far

Utah is 6-0, 3-0 in the Big 12 and 4-0 at home. It scores 40.2 points a game and allows 14.8. Against its five FBS opponents it is 5-0 with an average margin of +20.0. The 66-14 win over Idaho on 3 September came against a team outside the FBS. Its latest game was its closest: 27-24 at Colorado on 17 October.

Houston is 6-1, 3-1 in the Big 12, and has won four straight. It scores 39.3 and allows 21.0. Against FBS teams it is 5-1 with an average margin of +9.5. Its one loss was 28-26 at Texas Tech on 18 September. The 77-6 win over Southern came against a team outside the FBS. Most recently it beat Oklahoma State 35-32 at home on 17 October.

None of these records or averages is in our number. They cover each full season. The method uses only home and road splits against FBS teams.

Utah at home, Houston on the road

Utah’s 2026 part of the home sample is three wins: 43-10 over Arkansas on 12 September, 33-0 over Utah State on 19 September and 41-24 over Kansas on 10 October. The one home loss to an FBS team in the span came in 2025, when Utah went 5-1 at home.

Houston’s 2026 road games are the 28-26 loss at Texas Tech, a 42-28 win at Georgia Southern on 26 September and a 35-16 win at Kansas State on 10 October. The rest of its road half comes from a 2025 season in which it went 6-0 away from home.

The method leaves out two halves. One is Utah on the road: 31-17 at Iowa State and 27-24 at Colorado this season, and 5-1 on the road in 2025. The other is Houston at home: 4-0 this season, but 3-3 in 2025. The method reads Houston’s stronger half. That is part of why the number does not lean further toward the Cougars.

Last season, and no game between them

Utah went 11-2 in 2025, 10-2 against FBS teams, scoring 41.3 a game and allowing 18.9, an average margin of +22.4. It beat Nebraska 44-22 at a neutral site on 31 December 2025. Houston went 10-3, 9-3 against FBS teams, at 29.1 scored and 22.8 allowed, a margin of +6.2. It beat LSU 38-35 at a neutral site on 27 December 2025.

Both bowl games were neutral, so neither is in our number. The two teams did not play each other in 2025 or 2026. No game between them sits inside the sample.

Pick: No bet on Houston +6.5

Houston +6.5 at +100, DraftKings, read 24 October 2026 at 00:16 UTC. The spread opened at Utah -6.5. The gap is 1.3 points against a 3-point threshold, so this is a pass.

A gap of 1.3 points is the kind of noise the rule is built to ignore. This season points the same way. Utah’s FBS margin is +20.0 and Houston’s is +9.5. The market’s 68.5% for Utah sits within two points of ESPN’s 67.2%. Three separate readings put Utah a clear but beatable favourite, and the 6.5 is a fair way to price that.

What kills the bet

The bet does not exist yet, so the question is what creates one. Houston becomes a bet at +8.2 or better. Utah becomes the bet at -2.2 or better. Inside that range, this page passes.

Nothing on the ESPN game page, read 24 October 2026 at 00:16 UTC, states who is unavailable. A late absence could move the line toward one of those thresholds. Check the lineups before you bet.

The total and the moneyline

The total is 56.5, up from 50.5 at the open. The over is -115 and the under -105. Across 2025 and 2026, Utah’s games against FBS teams went over in 7 of 17, and Houston’s in 6 of 18.

This season Utah’s five FBS games produced 53, 33, 48, 65 and 51 points. Houston’s six produced 53, 54, 70, 44, 51 and 67. These are counts, not a number from the method. The method stakes the spread only, so there is no bet on the total.

The moneyline is context. Houston at +205 against a 31.5% market chance and ESPN’s 32.9% gives no reason to stake a market the method does not use. No bet.
