Illinois vs Maryland Best Pick, Prediction and Odds

No bet on Maryland +2.5. Our number is Maryland +0.8, and a 1.7-point gap is short of the 3 points a bet needs.

Illinois is a 2.5-point favorite at Maryland at DraftKings. Our number has Maryland losing by 0.8. The gap points to Maryland, but at 1.7 points it is under the 3-point threshold the rule sets, so the price stands.

Illinois vs Maryland prediction: the prices

Illinois at Maryland kicks off Saturday 31 October at 12:00 PM ET at SECU Stadium in College Park, a Big Ten game. Neither team is ranked in the AP Poll, Week 9. DraftKings has Illinois -2.5 at -115 and Maryland +2.5 at -105, read 30 October 2026 at 00:40 UTC.

On the moneyline, Illinois is -135 and Maryland +114. A book builds in a margin, the extra that makes the two prices add to more than 100%. With the margin removed, those prices give Illinois a 55.1% chance to win and Maryland 44.9%. ESPN’s FPI is more confident in Illinois, at 69.5%.

How Maryland +0.8 is reached

Our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together. Bowl and playoff games are at neutral sites and are left out.

Maryland is 2-7 at home against FBS teams over that span, losing by 11.2 points a game. Illinois is 3-4 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 9.6 a game. Half the difference between -11.2 and -9.6 is -0.8: Maryland by minus 0.8, or Maryland +0.8 as a spread.

The spread is Maryland +2.5, so the gap is 1.7 points toward Maryland. The base is 16 games, 9 for Maryland and 7 for Illinois. Both clear the 4-game minimum. The sample is large enough; the gap is too small.

Maryland at home, Illinois on the road

Maryland’s three home games against FBS teams this season were all losses: 35-26 to Virginia Tech on 19 September, 54-3 to UCLA on 26 September and 37-30 to Rutgers on 17 October. Its only home win of 2026 was 62-0 over Hampton, a team outside the FBS, which the method does not count. In 2025 Maryland was 3-4 at home.

Illinois has been on the road against FBS teams twice this season. It lost 42-19 at Ohio State on 26 September and won 38-37 at Michigan State on 10 October. In 2025 it was 2-3 on the road.

Both halves are poor. Maryland loses at home by more than Illinois loses away, but only by enough to put Illinois a fraction of a point ahead. The halves the method leaves out are Maryland on the road and Illinois at home, where Illinois went 6-1 in 2025 and is 3-2 this season.

This season so far

Records sit outside our number. Maryland is 2-5, 0-4 in the Big Ten, and has lost five straight. It scores 28.3 points a game and allows 33.3, a margin of -5.0. Against FBS teams alone it is 1-5 with a margin of -16.2; its one FBS win was 38-14 at UConn on 12 September.

Illinois is 4-3, 2-2 in the Big Ten, and has won two straight. It scores 30.3 and allows 25.3, a margin of +5.0, and is 3-3 against FBS teams at -0.5 a game. Most recently it beat Oregon 21-10 at home on 24 October.

On this season alone, Illinois has been the clearly better side against FBS teams. In our view that is the strongest case against Maryland, and it is why we would not treat the 1.7-point lean as anything more than noise. The method trusts two seasons of venue splits, and they make this close to a coin flip.

Last season and the meeting

Illinois went 9-4 in 2025, 8-4 against FBS teams, scoring 29.4 and allowing 23.6. It beat Tennessee 30-28 on 30 December 2025 at a neutral site, a game the method leaves out. Maryland went 4-8, 3-8 against FBS teams, at -3.0 a game.

The teams met once in the span. Illinois won 24-6 on 15 November 2025 at Illinois. That was an Illinois home game, so the method does not use it.

What kills the bet

There is no bet to kill. It takes a line move to create one. Maryland becomes the bet at +3.8 or better. Illinois becomes the bet only as an underdog of 2.2 points or more, which would take a large move.

This page states no one as out: the ESPN game page read on 30 October 2026 at 00:39 UTC gave us no injury list to use. Check the lineups before you bet.
