The moneyline is Michigan -700 and Rutgers +500. A book builds in a margin, an extra amount that makes the two prices add to more than 100%. With that margin removed, the prices give Michigan an 84.0% chance to win and Rutgers 16.0%. ESPN’s FPI is close to the market: Michigan 83.7%, Rutgers 16.3%. The moneyline is context only. The method stakes the spread.

How Rutgers +4.3 is reached

The method takes two averages. One is the home team’s average margin at home. The other is the visitor’s average margin on the road. Both are against FBS teams only, over 2025 and 2026 together. Our home margin is half the difference between them. Bowl and playoff games are played at neutral sites, so they are left out.

Rutgers is 3-6 at home against FBS teams over that span, losing by 7.7 points a game. Michigan is 4-3 on the road against FBS teams, winning by 0.9 a game. Half the difference is a Rutgers home margin of -4.3, which reads as a spread of Rutgers +4.3.

The base is 16 games, 9 for Rutgers and 7 for Michigan. Both clear the 4-game minimum the rule sets. Against the market’s 15.5, our 4.3 leaves a gap of 11.2 points.

This season so far

Some things are outside our number. Rutgers is 2-5 and 1-3 in the Big Ten. Against FBS teams it is 1-5, with an average margin of -13.8 a game. Its one other win was 58-7 over Howard, a team outside the FBS. It lost 42-14 at Northwestern on 24 October.

Michigan is 4-3, also 1-3 in the Big Ten, with all seven games against FBS teams. It scores 20.3 points a game, allows 15.7, and its margin is +4.6. It lost 13-6 at home to Indiana on 24 October. Neither team is ranked in the AP Poll, Week 9.

On this season alone the market has the better of the argument. Rutgers’ -13.8 against FBS teams sits much closer to the spread than our -4.3 does. The case for Rutgers rests on the two-season sample, and the one season is the risk.

Rutgers at home, Michigan on the road

Rutgers has played three home games against FBS teams this season and lost all three: 37-21 to Massachusetts on 3 September, 42-35 to USC on 19 September and 47-15 to Indiana on 3 October. The 3-6 home record across both seasons includes these three.

Michigan has played one road game this season, a 20-14 loss at Minnesota on 3 October. Its 2025 road record was 4-2. Most of Michigan’s half of the number is last season’s team, and that is the weak point of the sample.

The halves the method leaves out are both kind to Michigan. Michigan is 4-2 at home this season, though its home wins came by 1, 7, 35 and 3 points (13-12 over Western Michigan, 17-10 over Oklahoma, 52-17 over UTEP, 21-18 over Penn State). Rutgers is 1-1 on the road this season against FBS teams after 1-4 on the road in 2025.

The season around it

Rutgers went 5-7 in 2025, 4-7 against FBS teams, scoring 28.7 points a game and allowing 31.8, a margin of -3.2. It has scored the same 28.7 a game this season and allowed 33.3.

Michigan went 9-4 in 2025, scoring 27.5 and allowing 20.4, a margin of +7.2. It lost 41-27 to Texas on 31 December 2025, a neutral-site bowl game the method does not use. The teams did not play each other in 2025 or 2026, so no game between them is in our number.

Both teams played Indiana this season. Rutgers lost 47-15 at home. Michigan lost 13-6 at home. Neither result is a road game for Michigan, so neither is in Michigan’s half.

Pick: Rutgers +15.5

Rutgers +15.5 at -110 at DraftKings, read 30 October 2026, 00:40 UTC. The gap is 11.2 points against a 3-point threshold. Rutgers opened at +14.

It rests on 16 games, split 9 and 7. Rutgers’ half carries three home losses from this season. Michigan’s half is mostly 2025.

What kills the bet

The line. Rutgers stays a bet down to +7.3. Michigan would become the bet only at -1.3 or shorter, which is far from any price posted for this game.

The risk is this season. Rutgers’ 1-5 record and -13.8 margin against FBS teams say the spread is close to right, and our number trusts two seasons over six games.

The ESPN game page, read 30 October 2026 at 00:39 UTC, carried no injury entries for either team. Check the lineups before you bet.

No bet on the total. The two teams point in opposite directions, and our method stakes the spread only. These are counts, not a number.
