Minnesota at Purdue Best Pick, Prediction and Odds

Our number has Purdue by 2.3. Purdue is a bet at +1 or more, Minnesota at +5.5 or more.

No line had been posted for this game as of 28 September. Our number makes Purdue a 2.3-point favourite at home. A side becomes a bet when our number and the spread are 3 or more points apart, so the call for now is a pair of prices, one on each side.

How the number is built

The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.

Purdue is 1-7 at home against FBS teams over that span, losing by 15.2 points a game across 8 games. Minnesota is 1-5 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 19.8 a game across 6 games. The difference is 4.6 points. Half of it is 2.3, in Purdue’s favour.

Both samples clear our 4-game minimum. Two of Purdue’s 8 games are from 2026. One of Minnesota’s 6 is.

Purdue at home

The one home win in the sample is 31-0 over Ball State on 30 August 2025. The seven losses are 33-17 to USC, 43-27 to Illinois, 27-24 to Rutgers, 34-10 to Ohio State and 56-3 to Indiana in 2025, then 38-36 to Wake Forest and 49-10 to Notre Dame in September 2026.

The Indiana game carries a lot of weight. Take out its 53-point margin and Purdue’s home average is minus 9.9 across 7 games, which would move our number to Purdue by 5.0. We keep it in. The method does not drop results it dislikes.

Minnesota on the road

Minnesota went 7-0 at home and 0-5 on the road in 2025. The road losses were 27-14 at California, 42-3 at Ohio State, 41-3 at Iowa, 42-13 at Oregon and 38-35 at Northwestern.

The one road win in the sample came on 26 September: 27-24 at Washington. Minnesota’s 20-17 bowl win over New Mexico was at a neutral site, so the method leaves it out. Three of the six road games were lost by 29 points or more, and that is what drags the average to minus 19.8.

2026 so far

Minnesota is 3-1, 1-0 in the Big Ten, and has won two in a row. It has scored 35.0 points a game and allowed 19.0, but that includes a 59-7 win over Eastern Illinois, a team outside the FBS. Against its three FBS opponents it has scored 27.0 and allowed 23.0, and the loss was 38-13 at home to Mississippi State on 12 September.

Purdue is 1-3, 0-1 in the Big Ten, and has lost three straight. Its only win was 44-19 over Indiana State, also outside the FBS. Against FBS teams it is 0-3, scoring 28.0 a game and allowing 46.3.

ESPN’s FPI gives Minnesota a 58.1% chance to win. Our number leans the other way, and it is built only from Purdue’s home games and Minnesota’s road games.

Last season

Minnesota went 8-5 in 2025, scoring 23.0 points a game and allowing 22.9. Purdue went 2-10, scoring 18.8 and allowing 31.8.

The two met once in that span: Minnesota won 27-20 at home on 11 October 2025. It was a Purdue road game and a Minnesota home game, so it sits in neither sample used here.

Pick: Purdue +1 or more, Minnesota +5.5 or more

There is no line, so there is no bet yet. Our number is Purdue by 2.3 on 14 games, split 8 and 6.

Purdue becomes a bet at +1 or longer, where the gap is 3.3 points. Minnesota becomes a bet at +5.5 or longer, where the gap is 3.2. Anything from Purdue -5 to Purdue +0.5 is a pass: at Purdue -5 the gap is 2.7.

What changes it

The line, first. If the market sides with FPI and makes Minnesota the favourite by a point or more, Purdue is the bet.

Results, second. A Purdue home game or a Minnesota road game against an FBS team before 10 October joins the sample and moves our number. The full page re-reads both the week of the game.
