North Dakota State vs New Mexico Best Pick, Prediction and Odds

No bet on New Mexico -4.5. Our number says New Mexico by 6, but North Dakota State has only three road games against FBS teams, one short of the minimum.

New Mexico is a 4.5-point favorite over North Dakota State at DraftKings, read 24 October 2026 at 00:16 UTC. Our number is New Mexico by 6.0. The gap is 1.5 points toward New Mexico, and the threshold for a bet is 3. This prediction fails on two counts: the gap is too small, and the sample under it is too thin.

The prices and what they say

The spread is New Mexico -4.5 at -112 and North Dakota State +4.5 at -108. New Mexico opened at -3.5. On the moneyline New Mexico is -192 and North Dakota State +160.

Two fair prices for the same game add to 100%. A book’s prices add to more, and that extra is the margin it builds in. With the margin taken out, the moneyline gives New Mexico a 63.1% chance to win and North Dakota State 36.9%. ESPN’s FPI is further toward the home side: New Mexico 79.5%, North Dakota State 20.5%.

How New Mexico by 6 is reached

Our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road. It counts games against FBS teams only, over 2025 and 2026 together, and leaves out bowl and playoff games because they are played at neutral sites.

New Mexico is 7-0 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 19.0 points a game. North Dakota State is 2-1 on the road against FBS teams, winning by 7.0 a game. Half the difference is 6.0, so New Mexico by 6.

The rule needs at least 4 games in each sample. New Mexico has 7. North Dakota State has 3, because it played no FBS teams in 2025. Below four games the road number describes three Saturdays, not a team, and the method returns no bet whatever the gap.

This season so far

New Mexico is 5-1, 2-0 in the Mountain West and 3-0 at home, on a three-game winning streak. It scores 39.7 points a game and allows 10.5. Against FBS teams it is 4-1 with a margin of +22.4. Its one loss was 14-6 at Oklahoma on 19 September. Most recently it won 21-10 at Hawai’i on 17 October.

North Dakota State is 6-1, 3-1 in the conference and 4-0 at home. It scores 29.4 and allows 11.3. Against FBS teams it is 5-1 with a margin of +14.8. It lost 13-7 at UNLV on 10 October, then beat Nevada 31-17 at home a week later.

These season records sit outside our number. The method reads only New Mexico’s home games and North Dakota State’s road games against FBS teams.

New Mexico at home, North Dakota State on the road

New Mexico’s seven home wins over FBS teams include two this season: 38-7 over Central Michigan on 5 September and 61-7 over UTEP on 3 October. The rest come from 2025, when the Lobos went 6-0 at home overall. The 70-7 win over Mercyhurst on 12 September is left out, as Mercyhurst is not an FBS team.

North Dakota State’s three road games against FBS teams are all from this season. It won 38-32 at Air Force on 12 September and 31-10 at Sacramento State on 19 September, then lost 13-7 at UNLV. One six-point win, one 21-point win and one six-point loss: that spread of results is why three games prove nothing.

The halves the method leaves out point the same way as the number. New Mexico is 2-1 on the road against FBS teams this season. North Dakota State is 3-0 at home against them, by 26, 28 and 14.

The season around it

New Mexico went 9-4 in 2025, 8-4 against FBS teams, with an average margin of +4.8. It was 6-0 at home and 3-3 on the road. Its season ended with a 20-17 loss to Minnesota at a neutral site on 26 December 2025, which the method does not use.

North Dakota State went 12-1 in 2025, scoring 41.1 points a game and allowing 13.0, a margin of +28.1. It went 6-1 at home and 6-0 on the road. None of those 13 games was against an FBS team, so none of them is in our number.

Pick: No bet

No bet on the spread. New Mexico -4.5 at -112, North Dakota State +4.5 at -108, DraftKings, read 24 October 2026 at 00:16 UTC. The line opened at New Mexico -3.5.

Our number is 1.5 points from the price, against a 3-point threshold. Even a larger gap would not make this a bet: North Dakota State’s road sample is 3 games against a minimum of 4.

What kills the bet

On the number alone, New Mexico becomes the bet at -3 or shorter, and North Dakota State at +9 or longer. Both are conditional. The sample rule holds until North Dakota State plays a fourth road game against an FBS team, so at today’s 3 games neither price produces a bet.

The ESPN game page, read 24 October 2026 at 00:16 UTC, carried no injury list for either team. Check the lineups before you bet.
