Rutgers vs Northwestern Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
Our number has Northwestern by 12.2. At +16.5, take Rutgers.
No. 24 Northwestern is a 16.5-point favorite over Rutgers at DraftKings, the same line it opened at. Our number is Northwestern by 12.2. The gap is 4.3 points on Rutgers’ side, and the threshold for a bet here is 3.
The prices
The spread is Northwestern -16.5 at -112 and Rutgers +16.5 at -108, read 22 October 2026 at 21:09 UTC. The moneyline is Northwestern -800 and Rutgers +550.
A book builds a margin into its prices, so the two sides add to more than 100%. With that margin taken out, the moneyline gives Northwestern an 85.2% chance to win and Rutgers 14.8%. ESPN’s FPI is a little further toward Northwestern, at 91% to 9%. Our method does not stake the moneyline; it is here as context.
How 12.2 is reached
Our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road. It uses games against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together. Bowl and playoff games are neutral and left out.
Northwestern is 7-2 at home against FBS teams over that span, winning by 13.8 points a game. Rutgers is 2-5 on the road against FBS teams, losing by 10.6 a game. Half the difference is 12.2.
The base is 16 games, 9 for Northwestern and 7 for Rutgers. Both clear the 4-game minimum the rule sets. That is enough to run the number, and it is still a small sample.
Against the 16.5 on the board, 12.2 leaves a 4.3-point gap toward Rutgers. The rule bets any side 3 points or more from the spread.
This season so far
Northwestern is 5-1, 2-1 in the Big Ten and 4-0 at home, on a three-game winning streak. It has scored 33.5 points a game and allowed 17.0. Against the five FBS teams it has played, its margin is +16.6. Its last game was a 24-21 win at Michigan State on 17 October.
Rutgers is 2-4 and 1-2 in the Big Ten, scoring 31.2 and allowing 31.8. Against FBS teams alone it is 1-4 with a margin of -11.0 a game. It won 37-30 at Maryland on 17 October.
None of these records enters our number beyond the home and road splits. On this season’s form alone, the market’s 16.5 looks reasonable. The case for Rutgers rests on the longer sample.
Northwestern at home, Rutgers on the road
Northwestern’s three home games against FBS teams this season were all wide wins: 41-7 over Colorado on 19 September, 34-13 over Penn State on 2 October and 45-14 over Ball State on 10 October. In 2025 it went 5-2 at home and 1-4 on the road. Its 34-18 win over South Dakota State on 5 September is outside the method, because South Dakota State is not an FBS team.
Rutgers’ two road games this season split. It lost 28-21 at Boston College on 11 September and won 37-30 at Maryland. It went 1-4 on the road in 2025. The 7-game road sample is its thinner half, and most of it is from last season.
The halves the method leaves out point the same way as the market. Rutgers is 1-3 at home this season, with home losses of 37-21 to Massachusetts, 42-35 to USC and 47-15 to Indiana. Northwestern lost 29-23 at Indiana on 25 September.
The season around it
Northwestern went 7-6 in 2025, 6-6 against FBS teams, with an average margin of +3.5. It scored 23.4 points a game and allowed 19.8. Its season ended with a 34-7 bowl win over Central Michigan on 26 December 2025, at a neutral site, so that game is outside our number.
Rutgers went 5-7 in 2025, 4-7 against FBS teams, with an average margin of -3.2. It scored 28.7 and allowed 31.8, and did not reach a bowl.
The two teams have no game against each other in 2025 or 2026. Nothing from a head-to-head is in the number.
Pick: Rutgers +16.5
Rutgers +16.5 at -108, DraftKings, read 22 October 2026 at 21:09 UTC. The line opened at Northwestern -16.5 and has not moved.
The gap is 4.3 points against a 3-point threshold. It rests on 16 games, split 9 and 7.
What kills the bet
The line. Rutgers stays a bet at +15.2 or better. If Northwestern comes down from 16.5 to 15 or shorter, the gap falls under 3 and the call becomes a pass. Northwestern would need to be -9.2 or shorter to be the bet.
The risk is 2026. Northwestern has won its three FBS home games by 34, 21 and 31 points, and Rutgers’ FBS margin this season is -11.0. Our number trusts two seasons over six weeks, and this season’s numbers are on the market’s side.
The ESPN game page, read 22 October 2026 at 21:08 UTC, carries no injury list, so availability is not stated here. Check the lineups before you bet.
The total
The total is 58.5, the same as the open, with the over and under both at -110.
Against FBS teams across 2025 and 2026, Northwestern’s games went over 58.5 in 2 of 17. Rutgers’ went over in 9 of 16. This season Northwestern’s five FBS games produced 48, 52, 47, 59 and 45 points, and Rutgers’ produced 58, 49, 77, 62 and 67.
No bet on the total. Our method stakes the spread only. The counts split in opposite directions: Northwestern’s games run under 58.5 and Rutgers’ run near it or over.
