How Detroit by 2.33 is reached

The method for the side, in one clause: half the gap between the two teams’ points differentials per game, plus 2.5 points for home field. In 2025 Detroit was +68 over 17 games, 4.0 a game. Miami was -77, or -4.53 a game. Half that gap, with 2.5 back to Miami for playing at home, makes Detroit a 1.76-point favourite.

The same sum on this season’s seven games each gives Detroit by 3.71. Detroit is +3.29 a game in 2026; Miami is -9.14. Weight the two seasons by games played, 17 for 2025 and seven for 2026, and the number is Detroit by 2.33.

The rule: a gap of at least two points, on 2025 and on the weighted number, in the same direction. Against +6.5 the 2025 edge on Miami is 4.74. The weighted edge is 4.17. Both clear two, and the smaller, 4.17, is the edge this bet carries. Even 2026 alone, the worst season Miami has in the sample, puts Detroit at 3.71, under the 6.5 on offer.

Records sit outside the method. Detroit is 5-2, 4-0 at home and 1-2 on the road. Miami is 1-6, 0-3 at home and 1-3 on the road. Last week Detroit beat Minnesota 19-15 as a 3-point favourite, and Miami lost 24-19 to New England as a 7-point underdog.

Against the closing medians, Miami has covered three times and pushed once. It covered at Minnesota (+10.5, lost 15-10), at the Jets (+3.5, won 28-25) and against New England (+7). It pushed at +7 against Cincinnati, a 31-24 loss. Detroit has covered three of seven: the Jets, Arizona and Minnesota. Seven games are not a rate, and none of this is in our number.

Detroit on the road, Miami at home

The method does not use venue splits. Home field is a flat 2.5 points. The splits below leave out neutral-site games.

In 2025 Miami went 4-4 at home, scoring 22.4 a game and allowing 25.4. Detroit went 4-5 on the road, scoring 24.6 and allowing 25.4. The halves the method leaves out lean the same way as the bet: Detroit was 5-3 at home, scoring 32.5 and allowing 23.0, and Miami 2-6 on the road, scoring 19.0 and allowing 26.0. In our view the Lions’ 2025 differential is built more at home than away, and this game is in Miami.

What kills the bet

The price first. Miami is a bet at +4.33 or better: +4.5 is still a bet, +4 is not. The other side needs far more movement. Detroit becomes the bet only when the Lions are getting at least 0.24 points, so Lions +0.5.

No absence has been used to change this number. A quarterback change on either side is the case that would send the method back to be re-run. Read both injury reports and check the lineups before you bet.

The method for the total: each team’s expected points are the average of what it scored a game and what the other side allowed.
