Sabres vs Capitals Best Pick, Prediction and Odds

No bet on the Sabres. Our number makes this game close to even, and the price has moved toward Buffalo since it opened, which leaves a gap too small to bet.

The Washington Capitals are -125 and the Buffalo Sabres +105 at DraftKings. With the margin out, that is 53.2% for Washington and 46.8% for Buffalo. Our number is 50.1% for the Capitals and 49.9% for the Sabres. The gap is 3.1 points toward Buffalo, and our threshold for a bet is 5.

How 50.1% is reached

Our home win chance is the average of two 2025-26 rates: the home team’s win rate in its own arena and the visitor’s loss rate on the road. Overtime and shootout wins count as wins. Neutral-site games are left out of both rates. A side is a bet when our number and the market’s differ by at least 5 points.

Alex Lyon is on injured reserve with an upper-body injury (ESPN injury list, entry dated 15 October 2026, return date given as 31 October, read 24 October 2026, 00:40 UTC). When a team’s starting goalie is out, our method is run again on the games without him. Lyon appeared in 36 of Buffalo’s 82 games in 2025-26, ahead of Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen’s 35 and Colten Ellis’s 16. He played in 18 of the 41 road games. In the 23 road games without him, the Sabres went 14-7-2, a 39.13% road loss rate. Our minimum for an NHL re-run is 10 games, so 23 is enough to use.

The Capitals went 25-11-5 at Capital One Arena, a 61.0% home win rate. Average 61.0% with 39.13% and Washington is 50.1%, Buffalo 49.9%. The market has Washington at 53.2%. That is 3.1 points toward the Sabres, under the threshold of 5.

The full road season gives the same answer. The Sabres went 24-13-4 away from home, a 41.5% road loss rate. On that number Washington is 51.2% and the gap is 2.0 points toward Buffalo. That is a pass too.

The margin is the extra a book builds into both prices so the pair adds up to more than 100%. At -125 and +105 they come to 104.3%. Taken out, the Capitals are 53.2% and the Sabres 46.8%.

Every input is from 2025-26. This season is not in our number. The Capitals are 5-4-0, 4-2-0 at home, and lost 5-2 to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday 20 October. Logan Thompson has played seven of their games and Charlie Lindgren two. The Sabres are 4-4-2, 1-1-2 on the road, and lost 3-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday 21 October. Luukkonen has played eight of their games and Ellis three. Lyon has not played any.

Washington at home, Buffalo on the road

At home last season the Capitals scored 3.39 a game and allowed 2.66, a surplus of 0.73. On the road the Sabres scored 3.39 and allowed 2.98, a surplus of 0.41. Both halves are winning halves. That is why the number lands near 50%.

The halves the method leaves out point the other way from the price. Washington on the road went 18-19-4, a 43.9% win rate, scoring 3.02 and allowing 3.29. Buffalo at home went 26-10-5, a 63.4% win rate, scoring 3.63 and allowing 2.90. Neither half is in our number.

The season around it

The Sabres were the stronger team over 82 games. They went 50-23-9 with 109 points and a goal difference of +47, beat the Boston Bruins 4-2 in the first round, and lost 4-3 to the Montreal Canadiens. The Capitals went 43-30-9 with 95 points and a goal difference of +19, and missed the playoffs.

Buffalo went 15-3-9 in one-goal games and won 8 of the 17 that went past regulation. Washington went 13-8-9 in one-goal games and won 6 of its 15 past 60 minutes. The Sabres won by two goals or more 35 times; the Capitals did it 30 times.

Washington won two of the three meetings. The Sabres won 4-3 in a shootout in Buffalo on 1 November 2025, and the Capitals won 2-1 in Buffalo on 12 March 2026. Neither is in our number. The third, a 6-2 Capitals win in Washington on 4 April 2026, is in Washington’s home half.

Pick: No bet

No bet on this moneyline. The gap is 3.1 points toward the Sabres on Buffalo’s road games without Lyon, and 2.0 on the full road season, both against a threshold of 5.

The line read Capitals -125 and Sabres +105 on 24 October 2026 at 00:40 UTC, DraftKings via ESPN. It opened at -142 and +120. At the open the market had Washington at 56.3% and Buffalo at 43.7%. The move since opening has given the Sabres 3.1 points, and the edge our number would have found at +120 is the edge the price has already taken out.

What kills the bet

A longer Buffalo price makes the Sabres a bet. At +123 or longer they are a bet whatever Washington is priced at. Against the Capitals at -125, they become a bet at +121 or longer. They are +105.

For the Capitals to become the bet, they would have to be +122 or longer. They are -125.

The injury list matters on both sides. Thompson, who has played seven of Washington’s nine games, is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. ESPN also lists Justin Sourdif day-to-day, and Vincent Desharnais, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Rasmus Sandin on injured reserve. Besides Lyon, Buffalo lists Jiri Kulich and Justin Danforth as day-to-day, and Sam Carrick and Matt Grzelcyk on injured reserve. Check the lineups before you bet.

The total and the puck line

The total is 6.5, over -112 and under -108. The Capitals’ games went over 6.5 in 34 of 82, a 41.5% rate, and the Sabres’ in 38 of 82, 46.3%. Washington’s home games averaged 6.05 goals and Buffalo’s road games 6.37.

The average of the two rates is 43.9% for the over. With the margin removed the over is priced at 50.4% and the under at 49.6%. Our number leans to the under by 6.5 points. Our method stakes the moneyline only, so this is a lean under, not a bet.

On the puck line, Washington is -1.5 at +195 and Buffalo +1.5 at -238, which is 32.5% and 67.5% without the margin. Last season the Capitals won by two goals or more in 30 of 82 games, and the Sabres lost by two or more in 20 of 82. Our number has Capitals -1.5 landing 30.5% of the time, a gap of 2.0 points toward Sabres +1.5. That is under the threshold, and a lean at most. No bet on this game.
