Rangers vs Blue Jackets Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
Bet the Rangers at +120. Our number has this game close to a coin flip, and the price makes Columbus a clear favourite.
The Columbus Blue Jackets are -142 and the New York Rangers +120 at DraftKings. With the margin out, that prices Columbus at 56.3% and New York at 43.7%. Our number has the Blue Jackets at 50.6% and the Rangers at 49.4%, a 5.7-point gap toward New York.
Where 50.6% comes from
The number is the average of two 2025-26 rates: the home team’s win rate in its own arena and the visitor’s loss rate on the road. Overtime and shootout wins count as wins. Neutral-site games are left out of both. Columbus had none; the Rangers’ 5-1 win over Florida at a neutral site in Miami on 2 January is out of their road half.
The Blue Jackets went 20-13-8 at Nationwide Arena: 20 wins, 13 regulation losses, 8 after regulation, a 48.8% home win rate over 41 games. The Rangers went 19-19-2 on the road and lost 21 of 40, a 52.5% road loss rate. Average the two and Columbus is 50.6%, New York 49.4%.
That is the whole case. Columbus won fewer than half its home games, and the Rangers won almost half of theirs on the road. A price of -142 reads like a home side that won far more often than that.
The margin is the extra a book puts into both prices so they add to more than 100%. At -142 and +120 they add to 104.1%. Taken out, the Blue Jackets are 56.3% and the Rangers 43.7%.
The objection is the rest of the Rangers’ season. New York finished with 77 points and went 14-20-7 at home, and the method never looks at that half. That is the design: the same two rates on every page, never the half that suits the pick. Our inputs are 41 Columbus home games and 40 Rangers road games, all from 2025-26.
This season has started for both and none of it is in the figures. The Rangers are 6-3-0 and lost 7-1 in New Jersey on Thursday. Columbus is 2-3-0 and has not played since a 7-3 home loss to Florida on Tuesday.
Columbus at home, New York on the road
The goals say the same thing as the records: two halves that were nearly even. Columbus at home scored 3.29 a game and allowed 3.07, a surplus of 0.22. The Rangers on the road scored 3.17 and allowed 3.12, a surplus of 0.05.
The other halves, which the method does not use: Columbus on the road went 20-17-4, the same 48.8% win rate, scoring 2.88 and allowing 3.10. The Rangers at home went 14-20-7, 34.1%, scoring 2.59 and allowing 3.02.
Over the full season Columbus was the better team. The Blue Jackets finished 40-30-12 with 92 points and scored exactly as many goals as they allowed. The Rangers finished 34-39-9 with 77 points and were outscored by 12. Neither reached the playoffs.
Columbus played a lot of close games. The Blue Jackets went past regulation 24 times and won 12 of them, went 18-13-12 in one-goal games, and won 22 of their 40 games by two goals or more. The Rangers went 11-12-9 in one-goal games, won 9 of the 18 that went past 60 minutes, and won 23 of their 34 by two or more.
The two teams met three times in 2025-26 and Columbus won two. The Rangers won 2-1 in a shootout in Columbus on 15 November, and the Blue Jackets won 6-3 there on 19 March. Those two are the meetings in our number: Columbus home games and Rangers road games. Columbus also won 5-4 in overtime at Madison Square Garden on 2 March, which is in neither half.
Pick: Rangers +120
Bet the Rangers on the moneyline at +120. The gap is 5.7 points toward New York, against a threshold of 5.
The line opened at Blue Jackets -155 and Rangers +130 and has moved toward New York since. It read -142 and +120 on 16 October 2026 at 15:38 UTC, DraftKings via ESPN.
What kills the bet
A shorter Rangers price. Against Columbus at -142, New York still clears the bar down to +113. At +126 or longer the Rangers are a bet whatever Columbus is priced at. The line has already come in from +130, and the gap is only 0.7 points over the bar, so this one can go quickly.
For the Blue Jackets to become the bet, they would have to come out to +120 or longer. They are -142.
An underdog loses more often than it wins; the case is that +120 pays more than the risk warrants. Lineups are the other unknown, and this page states nothing about who plays for either team on 17 October. Check both before you bet.
The total and the puck line
The total is 6.5, over +114 and under -135. The Blue Jackets’ games went over 6.5 in 37 of 82, the Rangers’ in 32 of 82. Columbus’s home games averaged 6.36 goals, New York’s road games 6.29.
That is 45.1% and 39.0%, an average of 42.1% for the over. With the margin removed the over is priced at 44.9% and the under at 55.1%, so our number leans to the under, by 2.8 points. Short of 5. Pass on the total.
The puck line points the same way as the pick. Columbus is -1.5 at +180 and New York +1.5 at -218, which is 34.3% and 65.7% without the margin. The Blue Jackets won by two goals or more in 22 of 82 games. The Rangers lost by two or more in 27 of 82. Averaged, Columbus -1.5 lands 29.9% of the time against 34.3% priced, a gap of 4.4 points toward Rangers +1.5. Short of 5, and our method bets the moneyline only. One bet on this game: the Rangers at +120.
