Last-Place Clubs Clash as Jazz Face Wizards
The bottom teams from each conference go head-to-head in the nation’s capital on Wednesday as the Washington Wizards host the Utah Jazz.
Wizards Struggle to Find Their Footing
With an 11-49 record, Washington holds the worst mark in the NBA and appears to be in prime position for the best odds in the upcoming draft lottery. The Wizards have lost eight of their last 10 games and are struggling to find consistency.
Jordan Poole, the team’s leading scorer at 21 points per game, has been sidelined for the last two contests due to a hyperextended elbow. Additionally, Malcolm Brogdon (12.7 ppg) hasn’t played since Feb. 10 as he recovers from a sprained left ankle.
Without their top two offensive weapons, the Wizards endured a 106-90 defeat against the Miami Heat on Monday. They managed just 36.9% shooting from the field and a meager 12 points in the second quarter.
“We just didn’t have that zip or sharpness to our game tonight,” Wizards head coach Brian Keefe admitted postgame. “We missed some easy layups early that I thought would have helped us. We weren’t sharp on either end. Our defense wasn’t physical; we weren’t in the passing lanes like we should’ve been.”
Khris Middleton, acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks, led Washington with 16 points and has averaged 12 per game over his first five contests with the team.
Jazz Face Historic Struggles
Utah is enduring one of the worst seasons in its 51-year history, set to miss the postseason for a third consecutive year. The Jazz just wrapped up a nine-game homestand, where they lost six of nine, and now head back on the road for the first time since Feb. 10.
Their latest outing was a 134-106 blowout loss to the Detroit Pistons on Monday. After leading by a point midway through the first quarter, Utah allowed a 14-0 run and never got back within single digits. Turnovers proved costly, as the Jazz gave the ball away 28 times—just one shy of their season high.
“The deciding factor in the game was turnovers,” Jazz head coach Will Hardy said. “We had 18 at halftime and 28 for the game. It’s really hard to win if we can’t take care of the ball. We did not do a good job of fighting for our space, and we did not do a good job of playing in straight lines. You put yourself in a really bad spot when you do that.”
One bright spot for Utah was rookie Kyle Filipowski, who posted a career-high 25 points and drained four three-pointers.
“I think the work that Kyle has done on his shooting is showing itself,” Hardy noted. “Kyle developing his perimeter shot has changed how he’s guarded. It’s really good for our team, and it’s really good for Kyle.”
Filipowski has averaged 16 points and 10.7 rebounds over his last three games. Meanwhile, Utah has been without leading scorer Lauri Markkanen (19.3 ppg) for five straight contests due to a back injury. John Collins, the team’s second-leading scorer (18.6 ppg), also missed his second consecutive game on Monday with back issues.
