Copa Tejas Battle Highlights Saturday Night in Houston

Austin FC continues to defy preseason expectations and will aim to stay hot when they visit the Houston Dynamo for a Copa Tejas clash on Saturday night.

Austin (5-3-1, 16 points) comes into the rivalry match riding a wave of momentum after a gritty 1-0 home victory over the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy. Brandon Vazquez delivered the decisive strike in the 81st minute, bouncing back after missing a penalty kick just 11 minutes earlier. Brad Stuver was stellar once again between the posts, making four saves to notch his MLS-leading fifth clean sheet of the campaign.

“For me, it was the most complete game that we’ve played so far at home,” Austin coach Nico Estevez said. “We’ve still got a lot to work on. So we’ve just got to keep stepping onto the pitch every single day in training, give 100 percent and make sure we keep improving.”

Despite being reduced to 10 men late after Brendan Hines-Ike was sent off, Austin’s defense held strong to secure the three points.

Houston Dynamo Look to Build on Unbeaten Stretch

The Dynamo (1-4-4, 7 points) have had a rocky start but are beginning to show signs of life with a three-match unbeaten run. Houston pulled off a dramatic 2-2 home draw against Colorado last weekend, thanks to new signing Ondrej Lingr’s stoppage-time equalizer.

Lingr, a recent arrival from SK Slavia Prague, wasted no time making an impact, adding a needed spark to Houston’s attack.

“(Lingr) did exactly what he needed to do,” Dynamo coach Ben Olsen said. “It’s nice to have a guy get on the end of something. I don’t think we’ve had that in a while.”

Anime Bassi also found the net for Houston, giving the Dynamo a much-needed offensive boost after scoring just eight goals in their first eight games.

Saturday offers Houston a chance to earn their second win of the season and climb out of the Western Conference basement. They will need to tighten up defensively against a confident Austin squad that has been executing late in matches.

Austin won two of the three meetings between these sides last season, including one at Shell Energy Stadium.

Fans and bettors tracking MLS Predictions are circling this Copa Tejas showdown as a key measuring stick for both sides as the season heats up.
