Brewers vs Padres Best Pick, Prediction and Odds
The Brewers outscored their opponents by 214 runs this season, the Padres by 41. Take the Brewers on the moneyline in Game 3.
DraftKings has the Brewers at +113 and the Padres at -136. With the margin removed, that is 44.9% for Milwaukee. Our number for the Brewers is 58.0%. The gap is 13.1 points, and the threshold for a bet is 5.
How the number is built
The method in one clause: each team’s run-based win rate for the 2026 regular season, set against each other, then moved by how often home teams won this season.
The run-based rate uses runs alone. It is runs scored to the power 1.83, divided by that same figure plus runs allowed to the power 1.83. The Brewers scored 832 and allowed 618 in 162 games, which gives 63.3%. Their actual record was 103-59, a 63.6% rate, so their wins and their runs tell the same story.
The Padres scored 722 and allowed 681, which gives 52.7%. Their actual record was 91-71, a 56.2% rate. San Diego won more games than its runs account for, and the method reads the runs.
Set against each other on a neutral field, those two rates give the Padres 39.2%. Home teams went 1,284-1,145 in the 2026 regular season, a 52.9% rate. Adding that edge takes the Padres to 42.0% and leaves the Brewers at 58.0%.
The series so far
This is a best-of-five National League Division Series, and the Brewers lead it 2-0. They won Game 1 at American Family Field, 3-2, on Saturday 3 October, and Game 2 there, 4-3, on Sunday 4 October. Both were one-run games.
Game 3 is at Petco Park. A Brewers win ends the series tonight. A Padres win forces Game 4, also at Petco Park, on Wednesday 7 October, and a Game 5 would go back to Milwaukee on Friday 9 October. ESPN lists both as “If Necessary”.
The Padres reached this round by beating the Cubs 2-0 in the Wild Card Series. None of these games is in our number. It rests on 162 regular-season games for each team.
The starters
Dustin May, a right-hander, starts for the Brewers: 4.70 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 145 2/3 innings in 31 starts. Nick Pivetta, a right-hander, starts for the Padres: 2.86 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over 34 2/3 innings in 8 starts. Both lines are ESPN’s 2026 regular-season figures.
ERA is earned runs allowed per nine innings. WHIP is walks plus hits allowed per inning. Pivetta’s line is 8 starts, too few to read much into.
Our number does not use the starters. It is built from what each team did across the season, with every pitcher it used. The market’s price does account for who starts, so part of the 13.1-point gap is the starters, and our method cannot say how much.
The Brewers on the road, the Padres at home
The Brewers went 48-33 on the road, scoring 4.75 runs a game and allowing 4.16. The Padres went 51-30 at home, scoring 4.26 and allowing 3.79. The method uses the full season for both teams, because a home or road split halves the sample.
The teams met six times in the regular season, and the Padres won four. The Brewers took two of three with Milwaukee the home team in May. San Diego took all three at home from 10 to 12 August, including an 11-2 game. That is six games, and they prove nothing about this one.
The price
The Brewers opened at +101 and the Padres at -121. Read at 06:51 UTC on 6 October, DraftKings via ESPN, they were +113 and -136. The market has moved toward San Diego since the open, which is the other way from our number.
The market’s figure is the moneyline with the margin taken out. The margin is the few points a book builds into both prices so they add up to more than 100%. Here it is 4.6 points.
Pick: Brewers moneyline
Milwaukee Brewers +113. Our number is 58.0%, the market’s is 44.9%, and the 13.1-point gap clears the 5-point threshold.
It rests on 162 regular-season games for each team. A gap this wide is a reason to check what the method leaves out, the starters and the lineups. On what it does read, the gap is more than twice the threshold.
What changes it
The price. At today’s margin the Brewers stay a bet at -124 or any price that pays more. Past -124 the gap drops under 5 points and the call becomes a pass. The Padres would need +159.
Then the lineups. A season of runs says how these two teams played from March to September, and nothing on this page says who is in either lineup. Check them, and the starters, before you bet.
The total
The total is 7, where it opened, with the over at -117 and the under at -103. Pass on the total.
Over the season, 86 of the 141 Padres games that did not land on 7 went over it, and 82 of 137 Brewers games. Those games were started by every pitcher in both rotations. A postseason total is set for the two starters named, so we pass on every postseason total, this one included.
