The Cubs finished +147 in runs this season and the Padres +41. Take the Cubs at +121.

The Chicago Cubs are +121 and the San Diego Padres -146 at DraftKings for Game 2. With the margin removed, that is 43.3% for the Cubs. Our number for the Cubs is 53.1%. The gap is 9.8 points, and the threshold for a bet is 5.

How the number is built

The method is one clause: each team’s run-based win rate for the 2026 regular season, set against each other, then moved by how often home teams won this season.

The run-based win rate comes from runs scored and allowed alone, runs scored to the power 1.83, divided by that same figure plus runs allowed to the power 1.83. The Padres scored 722 and allowed 681 in 162 games, which gives 52.7%. Their actual record was 91-71, a 56.2% rate. The Cubs scored 850 and allowed 703 in 162 games, for 58.6% against an actual 89-73.

Set against each other on a neutral field, those two rates give the Padres 44.0%. Home teams won 1,284 of 2,429 regular-season games in 2026, 52.9%. Adding that edge takes the Padres to 46.9%, and the Cubs to 53.1%.

The market’s figure is the moneyline with the margin removed. The margin is the few points a book builds into both prices so they add up to more than 100%; here it is 4.6 points. Out of +121 and -146, it leaves the Cubs at 43.3% and the Padres at 56.7%.

The Padres at home, the Cubs on the road

The Padres went 51-30 at home, scoring 4.26 runs a game and allowing 3.79. The Cubs went 43-38 on the road, scoring 5.26 and allowing 4.21. Away from home the Padres were 40-41, and at home the Cubs were 46-35.

The method uses the full season for both teams, 162 games each, because a home or road split halves the sample. The splits are here so you can see what that choice leaves out.

The teams met 6 times in the regular season, and the Padres won 1 of them. The Cubs won the other 5. That is 6 games, and they prove nothing about one more.

The series so far

This is a best-of-three Wild Card Series, every game at Petco Park. The Padres won Game 1, 8-0, on 29 September, so the Cubs need to win Game 2 to force a third game on 1 October.

Nothing in our number reads Game 1. One game is one game, and the method is built on 324 of them.

The starters

Kevin Gausman, a right-hander, starts for the Cubs: 4.51 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 177 2/3 innings in 32 starts this season. Nick Pivetta, a right-hander, starts for the Padres: 2.86 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over 34 2/3 innings in 8 starts this season.

ERA is earned runs allowed per nine innings. WHIP is walks plus hits allowed per inning. Both are ESPN’s 2026 regular-season figures.

Our number does not use the starters. It is built from what each team did across the season, with every pitcher it used. The market’s price does account for who starts, so part of any gap on this page is the starters, and our method cannot say how much. Nick Pivetta’s line is 8 starts, too few to read much into.

The price

The Cubs opened at +113 and the Padres at -137. Read at 07:48 UTC on 30 September 2026, DraftKings via ESPN, they were +121 and -146.

At the opening prices, with the margin removed, the Padres were at 55.2% and the gap was 8.3 points. Today it is 9.8.

Pick: Cubs moneyline

Chicago Cubs +121. Our number is 53.1%, the market’s is 43.3%, and the 9.8-point gap clears the 5-point threshold.

It rests on 324 regular-season games, 162 for the Padres and 162 for the Cubs.

What changes it

The price. At today’s margin the Cubs stay a bet at -101 or any price that pays more. Past -101 the gap drops under 5 points and the call becomes a pass. The Padres would need +129.

Then the lineups. A season of runs says how these two teams played from March to September, and nothing on this page says who is in either lineup. Check them, and the starters, before you bet.

The total

The total is 7, with the over at -125 and the under at +104. Pass on the total.

We pass on every postseason total: the season’s run rates come from games started by every pitcher in both rotations, and a postseason total is set for the two starters named. Across the season the Padres games averaged 8.66 runs, the Cubs games 9.59.
