The Mountain West has 10 football programs in 2026. Only five of the conference’s 2025 members remain, creating one of the largest single-season transformations in college football.

Air Force, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State, UNLV, and Wyoming remain in the league. Northern Illinois, North Dakota State, and UTEP are the three newcomers.

New Mexico Lobos

New Mexico enters as the favorite after Jason Eck transformed the program immediately. The Lobos finished 9-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play during his first season, narrowly missing the championship game through the league’s multi-team tiebreaking process.

Eck’s system gives New Mexico a clear identity. The Lobos play aggressively, create explosive rushing opportunities, and are comfortable taking calculated risks. That style helped them move from the bottom half of the conference into championship contention.

The challenge is handling expectations. New Mexico is no longer an overlooked rebuilding team. Opponents will enter the season with more preparation for Eck’s offense, and the +220 price leaves little room for regression.

UNLV Rebels

UNLV has reached the Mountain West Championship Game in three consecutive seasons. The Rebels lost all three, including a 38-21 defeat against Boise State in 2025, but their consistency remains difficult to ignore.

North Dakota State may be one of the strongest teams in the conference, but the Bison are not currently eligible to play in the Mountain West Championship Game.

The NCAA generally requires programs transitioning from the FCS to the FBS level to complete a two-year transition period. That restriction affects conference championship, bowl, and College Football Playoff eligibility.

The Bison enter with a regular-season win total of 9.5, the highest number in the Mountain West. That projection reflects their championship culture, experienced coaching staff, and ability to retain FBS-level talent.

North Dakota State can still influence the title race by defeating eligible contenders. Its conference games count in the standings of opponents even if the Bison cannot qualify for the championship themselves.

Can a Mountain West Team Make the College Football Playoff?
