Open Championship Betting Guide: St Andrews 2027
The 155th Open is on the Old Course at St Andrews, with the first round on Thursday, July 15, 2027 and the last on Sunday, July 18. Ryan Fox defends the Claret Jug after winning the 154th Open at Royal Birkdale at 10 under par, one shot ahead of Cameron Young, and the bets that pay at an Open are the ones priced for wind and firm ground.
The 155th Open at St Andrews
The R&A lists championship week as July 11 to 18, 2027, with the four rounds from Thursday the 15th. ESPN has the Old Course at 7,297 yards and par 72 for the event, two shots more than the par of 70 at Royal Birkdale in 2026.
The last Open at St Andrews, in 2022, was won low. Cameron Smith shot 20 under, 268, and closed with a 64 to beat Cameron Young by one, with Rory McIlroy third at 18 under. Fox opened with a 72, two over par, and after 36 holes he was 140, eight shots behind Lucas Herbert and outside the top 50. His third-round 62 was eight under par and lifted him to a share of second, two behind Sam Burns. Burns closed with a 72 and Fox with a 68, which was enough.
That is the case for keeping an eye on the board after Friday. A player eight back at halfway won the Claret Jug, so a live bet on Saturday morning can still find a winner outside the top 50.
156 players started at Birkdale and 78 of them played all four rounds. Scheffler, the 2025 champion at Royal Portrush at 17 under, finished tied fourth.
The Open bets you can make

- Outright: the player who wins the Claret Jug.
- Each-way: a win bet and a place bet of the same size; the place half pays a fraction of the odds if the player finishes inside the book’s stated places.
- Top finish: a top-5, top-10 or top-20 finish.
- Matchups and three-balls: which of two or three players scores lower over a round or the event.
- First-round leader: who leads after 18 holes.
- Props: the winning score, a hole-in-one, a playoff.
Each-way terms are printed on the market, and they vary by book. With one-quarter odds on the top 5, a $10 each-way bet at 40-1 costs $20. If the player finishes third, the place half pays at 10-1 and $110 comes back. At Birkdale that would have been Sam Burns, third at 8 under.
What wins on links golf
The winning score at the Open has ranged from 9 to 20 under par across the last six played, and the venue and the weather made most of that gap. Collin Morikawa won at Royal St George’s at 15 under in 2021, Smith at St Andrews at 20 under in 2022, Brian Harman at Royal Liverpool at 13 under in 2023, Xander Schauffele at Royal Troon at 9 under in 2024, Scheffler at Portrush at 17 under in 2025 and Fox at Birkdale at 10 under in 2026.
Three numbers suit the ground:
- Strokes gained around the green: firm links turf sends approach shots past the flag, and the short game saves par from there.
- Strokes gained putting: links greens are firm and undulating, and a player who lags his long putts close saves the shots a three-putt gives away.
- Driving accuracy: pot bunkers and thick rough punish a miss more than distance rewards a long drive.

Futures on the 155th Open
We have no 2027 Open price to show yet. When the board opens, read each price as a chance: +2000 implies 4.8% and +5000 implies 2.0%. A futures bet is worth making only when you rate the player’s chance higher than the price does.
