Hockey Betting: We’ve Found Value in an NHL Mismatch – Jump On It

This doesn’t seem fair, does it?

The Ottawa Senators have been downright non-competitive for the most part as they have stumbled their way to a 1-8 record, dropping eight games in a row after an opening-night win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

And it’s not even so much that they are losing, but the WAY they have been losing that really stands out.

With them being a big underdog to the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, is there any way we can go to get some value out of this matchup?

We think so, and you can bet it at America’s Bookie.

Senators vs. Oilers Money Line Predictions

NHL Betting Odds

Money Line: Oilers -233, Senators +193

Total: Over 6.5 goals -130, Under 6.5 goals -110

Puck Line: Oilers -1.5 goals (+105), Senators +1.5 goals (-125)

D.J. Smith’s team can’t even beat the puck line, as they have lost their last six games by a cumulative margin of 34-12. Yikes!

So yes, defense and goaltending have been a problem. In fact, it really doesn’t matter a whole lot who the starter in goal is, because there’s a chance the guy won’t finish. Case in point – Sunday night’s game between these teams, in which Smith gave Matt Murray the assignment but had to remove him after Murray allowed three goals on his first nine shots.

It was understandable that more would have been expected from Murray; after all, he won a Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins and brought a 2.67 career goals against with him to Ottawa. But it’s been a nightmare for him, as he has a 4.82 GAA at the moment, Marcus Hogberg replaced him on Sunday and allowed five goals. Neither of these guys has a save percentage over .850. Players on the Senators are starting to talk about “moral victories.”

We’ll tell you how bad it was in Sunday’s 8-5 defeat; Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl had six assists – one off the NHL single-game record – and was only the #2 star of the game. Of course, when you’re playing with Connor McDavid, who had a goal and four assists of his own, that kind of thing can happen.

As we write this, McDavid and Draisaitl are 1-2 in the NHL scoring race, so the oh-fense hasn’t been a big problem.

But they are also letting the opponent penetrate a little too much. That Sunday score resembled something from the old days – the Gretzky days.

Granted, Ottawa scored five goals when Mikko Koskinen got the night off, giving way to Stuart Skinner, who did not enjoy a fruitful NHL debut. Wanna laugh? His .868 save percentage is still better than either Ottawa netminder.

America’s Bookie patrons should be expecting a move back to the 6’7″ Koskinen on Tuesday, so perhaps the puck line is in play for us. But let’s not make believe that this supplies a heck of a lot of relief. His goals-against of 3.45 is ho-hum at best.

Wanna laugh again? Ottawa actually had a positive shot differential for the season going into that Sunday game, while the Oilers were allowing about 33 shots on goal per game. Actually, we’re not laughing, because we are going to use that to help make our point.

Check that. We WOULD, in the pursuit of going over the total, if we thought Ottawa could really be relied upon for some offense. But there is nothing sure about that. The Sens just came off three games against the Vancouver Canucks, who have allowed more shots on goal than anyone, and more goals than anyone but…… well, Ottawa.

Well, the Senators could only muster a single goal in each game, and a potent offensive club handled them by a combined 16-3 margin.

So we’re comfortable laying the goal and a half and looking for another offensively-potent NHL team to create some distance between themselves and perhaps the league’s least accomplished squad.

The Play: EDMONTON -1.5 goals (+105)
