PGA Preview: 2020 Corales Puntacana Championship Predictions

Are you ready for a first time PGA Tour winner? It could happen this weekend at the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. The young event, formerly a Web.com Tour tournament, has only been on the PGA schedule for a few years. Because of the Pandemic, it has gained importance with it’s rescheduled September date.

In the past, the Corales was an alternative tournament held at the same time as a WGC stroke play match. A two-year exemption was handed to the winner, some OWGR points, but no invitation to the Masters. That’s different this time around. A Masters invite will be extended to the winner.

That means a whole lot of PGA regulars, such as Bryson Dechambeau who nailed down his first Major by dominating the field at Winged Foot, will be absent. That will be true for the next few events until the rescheduled Masters rolls around in early November.

That opens the door for a large number of players to grab their first Tour wins with many looking to make their way from the Korn Ferry Tour to the PGA.

That starts with players such as Will Zalatoris at +1200 who carded his first Korn Ferry Tour win earlier this year at the TPC Colorado Championship. Zalatoris is the favorite to win outright – here’s how the top-five favorites come line up.

Corales Golf Club takes full advantage of the natural oceanside beauty of the Dominican Republic. The course is open with rolling terrain and natural hazards ranging from water to rock outcroppings. The three-hole final stretch is known as the “Devils Elbow” because of tight turns along the seaside.

The course plays long, 7,600 yards, and has two par-five holes stretching over 620 yards long. Greens are medium to large with undulations but relatively large landing areas. Pin placement should not be too tricky. Sometimes ocean winds can come into play which could pose a problem to players that can’t drive the ball low.

2020 Corales Puntacana Championship Betting Tips

Mackenzie Hughes +1400

Mackenzie Hughes suffered through a long stretch of missed cuts this past year – nine total. Since then, he’s gotten his swing back and finished with four top-ten runs including sole 14th at the Tour Championship. The week prior he finished T10 at the BMW. Hughes is coming into this tournament on a high note. He finished T2 here last year.

Charles Howell III +2500

Charles Howell III has three Tour victories and could easily add a fourth at Corales Golf Club. He finished the U.S. Open 30th and has jumped into the 80s on the OWGR list. He finished T3 at the 3M Open and followed that up with an opening-round 66 a few weeks later at the Northern Trust.

Graeme McDowell +5000

You have to give some love to Graeme McDowell as he’s the defending champion of this event. Plus he’s at +5000 which makes him attractive even more. He carved up Corales last year going 18 under while besting Mackenzie Hughes and Chris Stroud by one stroke for the win.

Others I Like

Henrik Stenson + Luke List: Henrik Stenson (+2500) can add to his PGA Tour wins – of which he has six. Stenson missed the cut at the U.S. Open after a surprisingly rough first two rounds. Luke List (+4500) has a game made for this type of golf course. List can put his wedges to work around the greens.
