PGA Preview: 2021 Farmers Insurance Open

It’s a packed field for the Famers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. As always, it’s going to be a great tournament to watch with its unique dual course format – more on that below. And, once again, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy top the favorites list just like last year!

This year Rahm comes in at +650 with McIlroy at +750. For comparison, last year it was switched – McIlroy was at +650 while Rahm trailed close at +750.

The two players front a solid field that includes eight past Farmers Champions totaling 12 wins at the event and fourteen players that have won a combined 27 Major Championships!

One of the most famous names when it Comes to Torrey Pines is Tiger Woods who has won the Famers seven times and captured a U.S. Open at the course. Sadly, Tiger will miss this year’s event due to back surgery but the field is still incredibly strong.

The top five players on the favorites list have all performed well at Torrey Pines but Rahm is the only past Farmers Champion to crack the top-five on the odds list. Here are the top-five favorites according to Intertops.

Jon Rahm +650

Rory McIlroy +750

Xander Schauffele +1200

Tony Finau +1800

Harris English +2200

The Farmers Insurance Open uses both the South and North Courses over four days with Saturday and Sunday play coming on only the South course following the cut. The South is known as a long haul as it is the longest set of links on the PGA Tour. Both courses are tailor- made for long muscled drives off the tee.

That being said, Torrey Pines requires a large amount of finesse! One of the quirks is that the greens feature two different types of grass. The North greens are Bentgrass while the South greens are poa-annua grass. This seems to challenge some players – especially if oceanside conditions are rough.

Speaking of conditions, the weather may be a concern during the first two rounds so distance and putting may be strained. Regardless, the course makes full use of the rolling terrain and small hills along the coastal cliffs. Roughs are medium to high with natural barriers, massive bunkers protecting greens. Water hazards are few.

2021 Farmer Insurance Open Predictions

Marc Leishman +3300

Marc Leishman comes in at +3300 as the defending Famers Champion. Last year he played an amazing game during perfect conditions. Leishman went 15-under for a one-stroke win of Rahm. Last week he finished T4 at the Sony Open and has a knack for playing the right club during tough weather conditions.

Harris English +2200

Harris English has notched a win this year and has come on strong during the end of 2020 and the start of this calendar season. He’s played well at the Farmers in the past and was in the hunt for the win in 2015 when he lost in a four-man playoff to Jason Day. Harris is known for utilizing all of the clubs in his bag which will come in handy during rough weather over two courses.

Xander Schauffele +1200

This is my gut choice. Xander Schauffele should know Torrey Pines like the back of his hand. After all, he grew up nearby and played both high school and college events at the famed course. For some reason, all of that course time has not transferred over to his PGA life! That should change at some point and it could happen this week.

Others I Like: I should go with Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy but I think there is too much value down the board starting with Jason Day at +3500 and Rickie Fowler at +6000. Day has won this event twice over the last few years and Fowler is due to turn things around and get back in the win column.
