The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games will get underway on July 23 2021 and continue through August 8 a year after they were originally scheduled. The coronavirus postponed the games and continues to have an effect on athletes around the world.

Team USA’s total medal counts at the last five summer Olympic games are as follows: 93, 101, 112, 104, and 121. Notice that Team USA’s total medals rose from the 2000 summer games (93) each to 121 at the 2016 games. The medal increased at each Olympics save for one – 2012.
In 2012 when Team USA won 104 total medals, there were 302 events across 26 different sports. Those numbers increased at the Rio games in 2016 to 306 medal events in 28 sports. Team USA’s medal count increased in 2016 and it should once again in Tokyo.
The Tokyo Games will feature 339 events in 33 sports. Many of the new sports and events being introduced at these games are favorable to American athletes. Baseball and softball are back. Three swimming events are added as is 3-on-3 basketball for both men and women. There are also new skateboarding events.
