Boston College at SMU Best Pick, Prediction and Odds

Our number has SMU by 12.2. At +20.5, take Boston College.

No. 21 SMU opened as a 21-point favorite over Boston College at DraftKings and is 20.5 now. Our number is SMU by 12.2. The gap is 8.3 points, and the threshold for a bet here is 3.

How the number is built

The method is one clause: our number is half the difference between the home team’s average margin at home and the visitor’s average margin on the road, against FBS teams only, 2025 and 2026 together.

SMU is 5-1 at home against FBS teams over that span, +82 points across 6 games, 13.7 a game. Boston College is 1-5 on the road against FBS teams, -64 across 6 games, -10.7 a game. The difference is 24.3 points. Half of it is 12.2.

Six games a side is a small sample. One game in each comes from 2026: SMU’s 34-24 win over Missouri State on 26 September, and Boston College’s 34-15 loss at Cincinnati on 5 September.

The size of the spread

The spread asks whether SMU wins by 21 or more. It has done that in 2 of its 6 home games against FBS teams: 34-10 over Stanford and 38-6 over Louisville. The other four were a 48-45 loss to Baylor and wins by 13, 6 and 10.

Boston College has been beaten badly on the road once in six tries against FBS teams, 48-7 at Pittsburgh. The other losses were by 2 at Michigan State, 10 at Stanford, 14 at Louisville and 19 at Cincinnati. It also won 34-12 at Syracuse. Five of the six would have covered 20.5.

The teams met on 8 November 2025 at Boston College, and SMU won 45-13. That was a 32-point margin, and it is the result the price most resembles. It was a Boston College home game, so it sits in neither sample above.

2026 so far

Boston College is 2-2 and 0-1 in the ACC. It lost at Cincinnati, beat Rutgers 28-21, beat Maine 22-16, a team outside the FBS, and lost 21-14 to Virginia Tech on 26 September. Against its three FBS opponents it has scored 19.0 a game and allowed 25.3.

SMU is 3-1 and 1-1 in the ACC. It won 27-24 at Florida State, beat UC Davis 56-10, a team outside the FBS, lost 41-31 at Louisville and beat Missouri State. Against its three FBS opponents it has scored 30.7 a game and allowed 29.7, a margin of 1.0.

That last figure is the soft spot in a 20.5-point price. SMU has not beaten an FBS team by more than 10 this season.

Pick: Boston College +20.5

Boston College +20.5 at -105. The gap is 8.3 points against a 3-point threshold.

It rests on 12 games, split 6 and 6. The 45-13 game last November is the strongest evidence against it, and it is one game.
